Here we go… First I show how easy it is to install shutters like these…. After showing several examples, I answer common questions that come up after installing my customers’ shutters.

For both motorized and manual shutters, take note that you will need plenty of help during the entire process — especially during hanging. So be prepared, get the right people helping you, and ask lots of questions along the way. Also, consider having helpers who are experienced in handling heavy loads (either paid labor or friends/family). Most installations should only take 2 hours or less; more than that could lead to problems. Here are tips while doing this part. First check to ensure all screws are properly installed and tightened down. Next inspect each individual board carefully—notably those near windows or doors. Finally, be careful to avoid moving boards around unnecessarily and leaving visible nails exposed (which can snag clothing). Once everything looks good as possible, put shims under door frames or windowsills and then attach your panels to them securely. If necessary, use a clamp or hammer to bring all the edges snugly together on top of the frame.

I am sure many homeowners ask similar questions but they often get answers from friends who aren’t really experts at installing shutters. So hopefully my series helps people find an answer to these questions quickly and easily. Here’s my first entry…
What types of products should I consider getting?
Shutters are usually made of either vinyl or aluminum. Vinyl shutters can be painted to match almost any exterior color while aluminum shutters come in a range of colors including white and black. Some shutters include blinds or curtains which allow light to pass through them while blocking sunlight.
If you’re going to install shutters yourself then you should probably stick with the vinyl style. Aluminum shutters tend to warp after being installed because the metal expands and contracts depending on temperature changes. If you decide to use vinyl shutters instead, you’ll want to go with the “soft close” type rather than the “spring loaded” version. Soft closing shuts keep more air flowing around the shutters and help prevent warping. Spring loaded shutters are easier to operate since they only need a push to fully close. But soft closing shutters cost a little bit more.
I recommend using a professional installer if you can afford it since they can provide better service. A lot of companies offer discounts for multiple installations or for large orders. They may charge slightly higher prices per window for labor costs, however, they usually offer a discount on material costs.
What size windows does my home/condominium need for shutters?
This depends entirely upon what you want to achieve. For example; if your primary concern is keeping heat inside during summer months and you don’t care too much about privacy then you could opt for larger panels.
