1. Learn how to properly measure the area of glass to be covered
When I started building out my shop, I had zero idea how to handle measuring out different sized frames. In my opinion, I feel like people get hung up on these different words and just assume they must be synonymous. But this isn’t true, especially with home shutters because they are not actually “windows.”
“Windows,” in general terms, refer to any kind of transparent object. A window could be glass windows, plastic windows, wooden windows, etc. They’re made specifically to allow light onto a certain area of space inside your house. And in most cases, they only provide the amount of transparency necessary for viewing outside weather conditions without providing additional privacy inside your space. Because of this lack of privacy protection, these windows aren’t designed for use in homes designed for maximum privacy.
What does this mean? For example, in areas where you want extra privacy, but still want natural light, you’ll probably need to consider some other type of blinds/shades (like roller shades). Or, if you prefer complete darkness over sunlight, you’d be better served buying blackout curtains instead of installing window treatments that will block any light from passing through them!
So why should you care whether something’s referred to as a “window”? Well, if you buy some sort of “California Shutter” thinking that it’s basically going to protect you against heat gain during hot summer months, then chances are, you won’t end up happy with the investment either way. If you live somewhere where winters are warm, though, this might work perfectly well for you since there wouldn’t really be a problem heating your entire living space anyway…and, if you’re a bit paranoid, having a couple layers of insulation would help keep it cooler indoors as well.
But again, if you want natural lighting AND total privacy, a good alternative is going to involve putting up some type of shade that won’t fully cover your whole window while still blocking enough sunlight to ensure proper indoor temperature control. So in short, the term “blind”, which refers to things that prevent light from coming in, usually isn’t interchangeable with the word “window”.
