I personally own several types of different California shutters, ranging from custom shutters for my personal residence that cost around $5k-$15k, through to commercial grade shutters for multi million dollar mansions costing upwards of $30K+. My wife and I bought our first shutters back in 2007. Since then we have purchased multiple sets of shutters for both our residential and business properties. As a result, we have learned a lot along the way regarding shutters, including which ones work better than others depending upon your climate, design preferences and budget constraints.
So without further ado, here’s a list of my favorite options:
1. Wood Cali Shutters:
Wooden shutters were once considered only fit for old homes because they were expensive to install. But today you see wooden shutters popping up everywhere from condos to mansions and everything else. If you’re planning on installing shutters, the main consideration is the type of material used. Wooden shutters should ideally be made of solid woods (not particle board). Solid boards tend to be less susceptible to warping and cracking and will provide superior protection from sun exposure, while plywoods can warp or split and eventually rot away.
If you decide to go with solid wood shutters, the next thing you’ll need to consider is the style. Most people prefer the classic plantation shutter because it adds charm to any exterior space.

This guide will take you through everything you need to learn about installing custom shutters. No matter who installs them for you, understanding this information first hand will ensure it goes smoothly every single time. We’ll be covering some things you probably already knew but just wanted verified, as well as plenty of important tips you should know about your specific situation. However, keep in mind that vinyl, just like every other material used to install custom home furnishings, does wear down over time. Some window coverings manufacturers offer solutions for maintaining or replacing these products should they become damaged.
3. Roller Shades Will Stay Strong but Start Tipping Toward Modernism
Roller shades remain one of the fastest growing window covering selections due to ease of use, flexibility, affordability, and practicality. Vinyl is typically used for outdoor applications but can be installed indoors if you live in a dry climate area. If installing your first vinyl blinds, you should purchase your first few shades of colors to test them out first before making a large investment.
Our Verdict: If installing a new home or condo then wood shutters provide better value than vinyl because they are less expensive upfront and will last longer over time. The only downside is that wood is harder to clean and maintain. However, this does mean you won’t need to spend hours cleaning every time you use the door/doorway.
If you’re considering adding shutters to a current middleton house then you’ll probably find that vinyl offers you more options than wood. For example, vinyl shutters are available in a wider selection of shapes and sizes, allowing you to design your shutters however you like without having to worry about fitting them around doors, windows, etc…
