1. Wood Blinds and Shutters
In 2017 we recommended installing vinyl blinds instead. However, since then many people still prefer wood. If wood isn’t what you like but you still like blinds, we recommend going ahead and getting them anyway. They’ll save you money down the road. Plus, if you decide you don’t like wooden blinds, you can always take them down and put something else in their place.
2. Doors
Since 2017 we recommended replacing sliding glass door tracks with French Door style. This was because they provide better insulation than standard track and allow the glass to remain clean longer.
3. Screening Options
We added information on how screen options impact privacy and noise control. For example, you may notice that many companies offer different types of mesh screening, which is an upgrade over solid panels. Mesh panels are a good choice if you live near noisy areas or if you’d rather keep things private.
4. Installation Services/Guides
Many companies sell products through dealerships who install the window systems themselves. While this does cost you less upfront, it often costs extra on top of that and requires you to pay someone else to install your system. This is especially true if your contractor only knows how to remove old windows and replace them with new ones. In addition to that, you won’t receive warranty coverage from a dealer unless they perform warranty work, so if anything goes wrong after installation, you could lose everything.
5. Privacy

Depending upon which window style you choose the size can vary greatly while maintaining functionality. If you already have windows installed, wooden shutters should always include multiple panels to cover both top and bottom sills leaving no gaps or spaces between panels. A good rule of thumb is 2×3 inches per panel width for a single pane glass insertable door where each panel covers 1/2 inch of space on either side of the frame. Our recommendation is to go bigger, especially on double hung units because this area tends to experience heat buildup and humidity resulting from direct sunlight coming through the glass allowing air conditioned areas inside and outside your home stay cooler and dryer. Vinyl products can range in price from $5-$10+ per panel, though prices tend to increase as the amount of panes increases. Vinyl comes in sizes ranging from 3×6 to 8×12 feet. Because of this wide selection of sizes you get much better value for your dollar by going larger rather than smaller. Once again, keep in mind that vinyl does not provide insulation nor moisture resistance versus real wood. So even if you end up sticking to a cheaper material just buy wisely. When it comes to framing, most manufacturers use pre cut frames. Frames can cost anywhere from $1-$30 dollars per piece. Most vinyl frames are only sold in sets of 4 pieces so you won’t be wasting much time trimming extra materials away.
