In this post I discuss my history with shuttering products; why shuttering was invented; tips and tricks for choosing the best California window covering; which manufacturers offer both DIY kits and professional installation services; and finally some thoughts about my favorite options today.
First, let me explain why I started working with shuttering materials. My background includes many years experience installing solar cells for roof tops and solar panels but, unlike other craftsmen, I really wanted to learn something different than just building things. So, after discovering that windows could be shaded for energy conservation purposes, I began experimenting with making custom shading systems for my own house. After several years of experimentation and refinement, I came across the idea of “shuttering” — basically putting screens behind the exterior openings of your home, like blinds blocking sunlight. These early experiments led to research showing that California residents get almost 10% MORE natural light inside homes equipped with these shuttering systems. And because these same materials work effectively indoors, they provide additional benefits including privacy, noise reduction, air conditioning control, and security against intruders.
Now, onto the good stuff; picking the best California Shutters for your home or condo in the next few decades. Since most people who buy shutters still get them shipped from China, I will focus primarily on U.S.-based companies and products.
