If you read through part 1 of this series, you’ll remember reading Shutterboys founder Daniella was working her way through a PhD program, when she stumbled into building custom shutters. She discovered many home improvement retailers sold DIY kits but few made it easy for customers to customize orders in a meaningful manner.
In order to learn more about the craftsmanship involved behind custom built shutters, and to test whether customer expectations matched reality, Daniella opened a store that allowed the community to become experts while offering expert quality materials and service. Daniella founded the business in 2015; prior to opening, she worked at large national retail chains and then began studying science education in college in addition to completing a Phd in developmental biology with a focus on neuroscience. “After graduation, a friend approached me asking if I knew anyone doing residential windows,” recalled Daniella.

If you already own a condo/coop then you probably understand why this post was created. If you live in one but aren’t familiar with the terminology used below, please read on.

The most common types of building regulations include “condominium” (where owners share expenses), “common interest development,” aka coops (which usually involve more expensive maintenance fees), and condos (usually cheaper).

What Is a Condo?

In general, condominium buildings consist of multiple apartments owned together by a group of people called condominium unit holders. Each owner receives equal ownership rights and responsibility for paying property taxes and maintaining common areas. Some condominium associations allow owners to purchase individual units while other require all of them to buy a full apartment building.

How Do I Decide Between Types of Buildings?

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with buying a condo or owning a cooperative building (or both!). However, there are a few different things to consider when choosing between these structures. For example, if you’d rather avoid paying more than $2.00 per square foot in maintenance costs and would prefer having a say in selecting building improvements (such as landscaping, exterior paint color, pool resurfacing, etc.), then a cooperative could work better for you. On the flip side, if you enjoy living near a community park or gym and are willing to pay higher rates for a larger space, then buying a condo could offer greater value.

What Is A Co-Op?

Cooperatives, commonly referred to as co-ops, are similar to condominiums except they typically charge more upfront fees and monthly dues and don’t offer the same level of flexibility and control over shared amenities.

So many times homeowners who install a door in their house end up regretting because they haven’t bought proper sized door frames or used premade frame kits. Unfortunately the average consumer isn’t prepared to buy readymade wooden panels for every entrance. As a result, homeowners often wind up having to cut down trees themselves. While cutting down trees for timber projects is fairly common place nowadays, it should still be avoided altogether whenever possible.
In my experience building doors was only something I had to deal with a few times during my career but I quickly became frustrated dealing with those types of mistakes due to lack of knowledge. If somebody gets injured while installing the door of his own house then he would definitely take responsibility because after all DIY work always involves risks.
One thing I noticed when working on construction jobs is that builders rarely took their time measuring each single piece of lumber accurately. By doing that way, we could avoid wasting hours calculating measurements once again. So I decided to come up with a solution. I started making my own template for measuring accurate framing size and dimensions.

This blog post will be dedicated to answering the question “What are the most popular trends for installing shutters this season?”. The answer is surprisingly different than many people would expect. Most people associate window treatments with the idea of darkening windows, adding privacy, and blocking sunlight. While those are great benefits, they aren’t the only things you should consider when choosing a style and type of window treatment.
Here are some additional considerations to keep in mind when deciding which product best fits your home or condo.
1. Functionality
When considering functionality, it isn’t just enough to install something that looks nice; the window covering needs to work well in order to be used effectively. If the design of your window coverings are poor, then they won’t function properly either. For example, blinds or curtains don’t offer adequate coverage in high wind situations. Awning systems are designed specifically to protect against rain while providing protection against sun and UV rays. They provide excellent shading without being overly restrictive or bulky. And they come with built-in mechanisms to prevent unwanted openings. These products have become increasingly common because they offer superior functionality.
2. Design & Color
While it’s true that there are thousands upon thousands of designs available, you still shouldn’t settle for anything less than perfection. When shopping around for a window covering you may find yourself comparing styles of shutters, shades, awnings, louvers, and other types of window treatments. But what separates the good choices from the bad ones is often as simple as color.
For starters, you may notice that certain colors tend to dominate certain seasons, but you might also see that certain colors seem to fade away during warmer months. For example, white is always considered the classic shade in terms of decorating a house. However, white tends to lose vibrancy as temperatures rise, especially during summer months. On the same token, red is typically associated with fall, winter, and early spring, but the warmest colors tend to be orange and yellow, both of which are associated with the late spring through early autumn seasons.

Wood shutters have many of the benefits of vinyl shutters without having some of the issues associated with them. Not only are they great to keep hot air out during summer months but they offer privacy protection from outside views, noise reduction, and energy efficiency, among other things.
The most common issue people run into when moving away from traditional vinyl shutters are maintenance. They often become dirty over time due to exposure to dirt as well as UV rays which in return makes the color change overtime. However, this is easily remedied. Regular cleaning will help maintain both exterior aesthetics as interior design qualities for years after installing. Additionally, vinyl shutters tend to be quite noisy because they cannot move much from their installed position making it harder for homeowners to enjoy peace and quiet outdoors. While wood shutters don’t pose these same limitations, they’re susceptible to problems like termite infestation, dry rot, mold, and mildew. So while wood shutters aren’t perfect, they still come out ahead in almost every way.
There’s another factor to consider. As mentioned earlier, wood shutters provide some of the same benefits, including heat retention, privacy, and sound barrier properties, as vinyl shutters, yet they can also benefit homes and condos differently depending upon their environment. If you live near busy roads or airports then wooden shutters would work better than vinyl; however, if you live closer to mountains or forests, vinyl could prove to be better suited for your needs.

Also remember that some shutters are susceptible to termite damage and moisture leaks, so always check around for signs of insect infestation, cracks in the frame, mold or rot. Finally, if you live in humid regions consider choosing “water proofing” shutters designed specifically to withstand regular rainfall & hail storms. These would often consist of special coatings applied to them that won’t rust, peel or crack under normal conditions. Note that these kinds of shutters will usually cost extra upfront…but you’re only paying for peace of mind, not for material costs.

In this article I will be sharing some cost estimates and information for different sizes, styles, brands, colors including vinyl shuttered windows. The average price for each option will depend greatly upon location due to higher labor costs in larger homes (where labor and material prices increase linearly). These numbers are based solely off my experience installing several types of doors/windows in multiple locations, however they provide guidance only. Be aware there is usually more than one type and style available for every step in cost. Some options are significantly less expensive, while other variations could run 3 times as high. Most companies offer discounts once installed, but you won’t save anything significant without careful research first. Once installed these products should perform well for many years. They are long lasting, weather resistant, and often require little maintenance. However if left unattended they become susceptible to moisture which can cause premature degradation, warping, deterioration, and structural failure. When choosing, consider the following factors: climate, overall size & condition of building(s), surrounding environment, materials used, energy efficiency rating, design considerations, aesthetics, ease of handling, quality assurance standards, product longevity and warranty expectations. Depending on the situation, a door or window can serve many purposes; however most homeowners desire privacy and security along with good acoustics and air circulation. There are five main categories of residential shutters: traditional solid panels, retractable panel systems, roll away / lift up panels, vertical sliding/tilting screens, and louvered slats for large openings such as patio doors and French Doors. Traditional Solid Panel Shutters consist of single piece heavy duty glass lite wooden frame clad/painted solid sheathing, typically 8″ wide x 1 ¾” thick. Retractable panel designs use horizontal rails (like those seen on rolling steel garage door tracks) to move the panel vertically and horizontally across the opening as required. Retractable panel systems allow for greater flexibility but are heavier weight requiring stronger framing techniques and hardware than solid panels. Louver Slat Screen Systems slide on top of existing frames allowing them to be made bigger. They can also be tilted or rotated making possible full view.

If this is something you often find yourself feeling while home watching TV, working inside or out enjoying some nice weather, than perhaps installing shutters should be high priority on your house improvement agenda. Although choosing which style of windows to install first usually seems straightforward enough, deciding on the type of window will actually impact everything else because shutters typically require specific materials to function properly. For example, wooden shutters would benefit greatly from having good ventilation, to avoid condensation problems, but they must be installed correctly otherwise they won’t stop drafts well. And most importantly, shutters require proper design work to fit the space and location of the building without covering the whole lot…or being way too tall and bulky. In short, shutters must fit each other perfectly to remain a functional aesthetic upgrade. So, whether planning on adding shutters to a project today or a few decades down the road, take note of these seven things you should consider. 1. Ventilation A good rule of thumb that applies to many rooms in homes is that you shouldn’t block 90 percent of the air supply coming through a door. That’s why, ideally, shutters should be designed to minimize obstruction by keeping outside light flowing freely across glass panels. This will help keep heat gain contained and air circulating around the window unit. When designing for efficiency in terms of energy consumption and reduced heating bills, make sure you opt for blinds instead of curtains as they allow natural light to filter in and provide better insulation against unwanted cold winds blowing in from outside. 2. Design While many people assume that shutters should always go above doors, that isn’t necessarily required. On the contrary, depending upon available space and the style of décor, shutters can sometimes look great alongside the bottom track lights, below floor-to-ceiling windows or even hung vertically inside cabinets. 3. Materials As mentioned earlier, the main purpose of shutting is to reduce drafts and prevent excessive heat gains, which are caused by sunlight shining through.
