California Shuttering History:
Before the invention of the metal track or motorized system, wooden slats and metal panels hung vertically above the glass of homes, schools and offices. Over time people began to demand better protection than just hanging heavy pieces of fabric over the windows. Wooden slatted shutters became lighter weight, easier to use and easier to keep clean. Slat shutters evolved to include small louvers along the bottom edge of the slats for ventilation. Louvered slats allowed air flow without having gaps between the individual slats, thus reducing drafts and increasing insulation. These early designs did little to improve energy efficiency though, because they still blocked light completely.
