There was once a time when wooden shutters seemed like the perfect choice—and they still are today. But for those who live in warmer climates now find vinyl shutters work better than ever because they stay cooler during the summer months while keeping heat inside in winter. Here are some things to consider when choosing whether you prefer wooden or vinyl:
Wooden shutters are made entirely out of real lumber including cedar siding and pine, which mean they offer no sound insulation. If noise isn’t an issue, wooden shutters would be ideal. However, many homeowners don’t realize that these materials deteriorate quickly when exposed to high humidity conditions so frequent washing will help prolong shelf life. Because they’re heavier than most other window coverings, wood shutters are often installed at least 5 inches below the bottom hinge edge of the opening. The result is an imperfect seal around the frame leaving air gaps through the material which prevents them from insulating well against cold drafts coming in under windowsills and along baseboards.
Vinyl California Shutters come in a wide range of colors, designs, and styles. They include slatted screens that mimic natural materials and can provide privacy without obstructing light. Unlike traditional wood shutters, vinyl options usually aren’t weather resistant and must be lined every 3 years or replaced with polyurethane foam seals. There was no way I was going to write this article without mentioning my own family history which includes a mother who built her home in North Beach, San Francisco in 1962 and used natural oak shutters to close the windows. She would take them down every night so she could see the city lights through the trees. At some point her son decided he wanted wooden shutters installed around his windows but they were just not available back then. He told me that during the Vietnam war era that people weren’t supposed to use anything made overseas. So, he got creative. His mom had already purchased all kinds of materials for custom window framing; the only problem was that they looked like something you’d find in a prison yard. So instead of putting these beautiful woods in storage until after he graduated high school, he started making frames himself from scrap lumber he found lying around the house. Eventually, he came across a supplier of vinyl decals in Los Angeles that was working on the prototype screens for the Apple II computer. They gave him a bunch of samples to play with. At first glance, the wood screen design seemed similar enough to his old fashioned frame designs that he thought he should try applying vinyl stickers and voila! A few years passed while he went to college, married and became a father. When he returned from law school, he brought all of those same ideas along with him. His wife helped install some of the original shutters and he began doing shutters full-time. Today, many of the things he did in 1978 still apply today. We work exclusively with custom builders of fine homes and condos who rely on us because it’s important to be part of the community. Our job isn’t simply providing products and installing them, rather, it’s helping people realize their potential.

How long does it take?
Depending on which type of custom home project you are doing, the average labor cost varies greatly. A typical 4×8 installation should only run $1,000-$3,500 depending on the size of window involved. As always, shop around for bids/estimates beforehand just in case they exceed expectations but keep in mind that labor costs tend to increase during busy times of the year like Memorial Day weekend, Labor day weekend, Christmas break, New Years Eve Weekend, Easter weekend, Mother’s day weekend, Father’s day Holiday weekends and Halloween week. Most residential projects usually involve either vinyl or aluminum windows, both of which can range anywhere from $5K-$15k installed price point.
Types of Custom Shops
For most homes, we recommend working with a company who specializes exclusively on commercial grade products because the majority of homeowners won’t ever notice or care what type of shingle material was used unless something goes terribly awry. For those people who insist on having their windows made out of fiberglass, aluminum or wooden siding then we highly suggest working with a local contractor who installs high end vinyl siding windows on regular basis (like us). Vinyl shingles typically fall somewhere between $7-12 per square foot while Wood Windows (our favorite) would generally start somewhere around 15+$ per sq ft.
Homeowners often ask “what’s the difference between wood windows and aluminum frames?” Well, firstly, wood windows are far superior than Aluminum and secondly Alu frames are easier to install and repair as opposed to those thick slabs of wood. On top of that, you won’t find many manufacturers offering wood windows anymore since most companies are moving towards metal framed windows.

Today I will be talking about some of the top trends, both positive and negative, around building materials, including window treatments like shutters. Of course, this trend analysis isn’t just specific to California. But because shutter installation tends to be cost prohibitive (often requiring multiple vendors), most homeowners tend to stay away from them unless they absolutely must use the material. This also makes us more reliant upon other design elements — things like architecture, lighting, hardware, the actual style of house/condo, etc. When you consider these factors, then yes, California’s influence on American home decor trends really does become apparent, especially in terms of color choices.
There hasn’t actually been a lot of movement since my original guide was published 5 years ago. However, this article won’t cover everything there is to say about California shuttering. Instead, I’ll touch briefly on what I’ve seen recently…
1) We’re now seeing so many different types of finishes being applied to metal shutters. From dark brown leather to brushed nickel to stainless steel, you’ll now find an almost endless selection of paint options available.
2) Color trends are still going strong…or at least trending strongly. Most colors seem to be returning to past themes that we see every 2-3 decades but the overall style of a home seems to continue shifting slightly leftward (less traditional homes, less modern homes). If anything, it feels like the average homeowner is trying to simplify his life — especially those who live in big cities and suburbs (the traditional white picket fence dream is no longer considered relevant).
3) Designing spaces specifically for technology is becoming easier than ever. Some of the most well known companies in tech offer “smart” home solutions today; products designed to help automate common household chores. These include thermostats, lights, locks, sensors and cameras (to name just a few). As far as shutters go, they provide added protection against thieves, a way to control temperature and security (i.e. close the windows). All of which are great reasons to own custom shutters.
