To explore the extent of the impact that influential individuals on social networking sites have on the opinions of voters around the country, I conducted a quantitative analysis of data collected through SurveyMonkey Audience on September 10th, 2019.
This sample comprised 1,000 individuals aged 18+ residing in the United States who use social networking websites and/or mobile apps. Of those, 578 indicated that they follow Donald Trump on Twitter while only 476 stated that they follow Hillary Clinton. These figures indicate that approximately 20% of respondents reported following both candidates on Twitter. A total of 810 respondents (80%) identified themselves as Democrats and 740 (74%) as Republicans. Respondents were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk and received US$0.50 compensation in return for participating in the study.
Results revealed significant differences between the social influencer follower counts of supporters in different demographic groups. Specifically, Democratic supporters were significantly less likely to report following either candidate on Twitter relative to Republican supporters (Figure 2).
