For this edition of “the ultimate guide”, I would like to take you through my experience purchasing shutters made by Shutterboy’s custom shop in Morinville Alberta. We ordered 2 sets to be installed throughout the Morinville condo building in order for us to test and see which ones worked better than others. The first set was installed in March 2018, along side my other windows already installed during 2017. When I initially saw them they looked pretty good but once again, a bit plain… nothing special really stood out. Then after some minor adjustments that involved trimming down the door frames which I thought wouldn’t matter because these would not get seen anyways, they ended up being pretty impressive. They matched perfectly with the existing blinds which were purchased around the same time as well. So far they’ve kept pretty nice although this summer hasn’t been quite sunny enough yet to really show off the beauty. Once spring arrives, expect these beauties to shine brighter than ever!!
This brings me back to where I started though.. why did I install shutters?? Well basically due to some major renovations going on around my condominium, with the addition of a bathroom, kitchen, living space and extra bedrooms a few years ago; we really lacked storage spaces, especially bedrooms since most of ours aren’t used. As soon as things got underway, we realized we definitely needed additional rooms to store the items we wanted to keep safe, organized and secure while allowing light to come in without feeling closed off or suffocated. These shutters solved both those issues nicely and allowed us to enjoy the benefits of natural light while still maintaining privacy, security and safety.
Another advantage besides just adding more useful spaces.. with them added to our place, our energy expenses, heating costs and cooling bills went way down, which ended up saving us a decent chunk of cash each week. Not only that, the savings weren’t short term either but rather long lasting. All of our electrical meters stopped jumping when temperatures dropped lower than normal and we’re still paying less monthly costs overall compared to before having doors. Overall, it wasn’t cheap but considering everything else was replaced, I consider myself to be extremely lucky!!!

WHAT ARE California Shutters?
In this post I am going to go through some of my favourite brands and types of shutters available and share why they are good options for homeowners, architects, builders and remodelers.
WHAT IS A CALIFORNIA SHUTTER?
California shutters are commonly referred to as plantation style shutters. They typically consist of panels made from glass, vinyl or other materials that cover windows, doors, skylights and patios while offering privacy and protecting against moisture damage.
WHERE CAN YOU BUY THEM?
There are many manufacturers who produce different styles of plantation shutters in North America and Europe. Most common ones include, but aren’t exclusive to; Hardie Board, Fiberboard, Vinyl Composite Shutters, Wood Blinds/Shutters, Architectural Aluminum and Wooden Venetian blinds/window treatments. When choosing which material to use for your project, research the characteristics and quality of each individual type. Each type offers varying degrees of strength, durability, energy efficiency and price. The material your choice will depend on whether it’s being used for covering one window or multiple panes, and the size and shape of those panes.
WHICH TYPE SHOULD I USE FOR MY PROJECT?
This depends entirely on what you’re building. Generally speaking though, wooden shutters should be considered a premium solution with superior craftsmanship and high end finishes versus cheaper alternatives like aluminum. For example – If you choose to install fiberglass paneled shutters, expect higher costs since these tend to cost less than traditional wooden products. However, because they are lighter weight, they offer ease of handling during transport and installation. Another thing to consider when selecting shuttering solutions is the amount of openings covered with them. Having a single patio door covered with shutters requires panels much wider then standard shutters. So depending on your design needs, either wide boarder shutters or large custom sized pieces should be built. Here is an example of a typical 3-over-3 design.

Fixed pannels are ideal if you want to hide all sides completely but tend to cost more since glass is required instead of vinyl. And finally – nothing beats traditional vertical blinds. What Is Shutterboys About?
I started Shutterboy’s back in 2011. My main objective was to find a way to produce affordable energy efficient shutters for homeowners.
In 2012 I purchased a large building in Calgary Alberta Canada and began producing custom made shutters through mass production techniques. My Story:
Before starting Shutter Boys I worked in various fields in construction including residential and commercial real estate development, remodeling/renovating buildings, roofing, windows, doors, siding, gutting houses, electrical wiring, heating / cooling upgrades, plumbing repairs, carpentry, cabinet making, plastering, drywall framing, finishing carpets, tiling floors, painting and many other trades. After graduating college in 1994 i spent six years working for a national contractor doing everything from concrete pavers to installing kitchens.
