Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
In this article I’ll be discussing which type of shutters would be better suited for my home and why.
I will go over some basic information regarding both types of shuttering such as material composition, price range, durability, maintenance, ease of use & installation, style preferences, available colors and finishes, and other factors.
California Shutters:
Wooden Cali shutters are made of solid lumber or plywood. Solid lumber makes wooden shutters extremely durable while plywood offers greater resistance against moisture than solid wood due to the fact that plywood consists of thin sheets glued together making them stronger than solid lumber. Plywood can come in many different sizes but most common size is 1/4 x 8 feet. Wooden Cali shutters offer a variety of styles and finishes including classic plantation shutters, French Country shutters, English Garden shutters, etc.
Vinyl Cali shutters consist of vinyl coated aluminum frames with fabric covering. They can either be custom designed for each house or they come as standard stock products. Vinyl Cali shutters have become popular because they provide great looks without requiring extensive painting or staining. These shutters usually have one color only and can easily blend well with almost anything inside. Vinyl Cali shutters can also be customized by adding additional layers of fabric, changing their design, and choosing from hundreds of fabrics.
My Thoughts On Both Types Of Shutters:
Both types of shutters have benefits and disadvantages. I personally love the simplicity of vinyl Cali shutters because they are easy to install, maintain, and clean.
However, I find myself leaning towards wooden Cali shutters simply because of their superior quality, versatility, and longevity.
If you live in a warmer climate like me then you should definitely consider installing wooden shutters instead of plastic ones, especially if your windows are exposed to direct sunlight. Plastic shutters tend to rot faster than wood shutters because of the extreme heat exposure. Also, if you are planning to sell your house soon, wooden shutters could increase your home value by $1 million dollars according to real estate websites.
