Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
Wood shutters offer many advantages over vinyl shutters including higher quality construction, better insulation properties, and longer lifespan than vinyl.
While both materials perform well in certain applications, each offers unique benefits. For example vinyl is easier to install but less durable and harder to paint. On the other hand, wood shutters tend to be thicker and heavier which makes them more stable during extreme weather conditions. Also, wooden shutters tend to be more expensive because they must be specially made.
In this post I will cover some basic information regarding the different types of California shutters, pros & cons of each type, and my recommendations for homeowners choosing the perfect solution for their home or condo in 2022.
California Shutter Types
There are many styles of shutter available today ranging from traditional plantation style shutters to modern wood blinds, roller shades, vertical blinds, and retractable screens. Some common shutter styles include;
Traditional plantation Style California Shutters
These shutters are typically constructed with solid slats of wood which slide vertically along rails attached to the exterior siding. They are usually painted white or cream, although some manufacturers produce custom color options. Plantation shutters come in several sizes and shapes, depending upon the size of windows, doors, or openings that are being covered with these shutters. Most are manufactured from solid lumber, while some styles use engineered composite woods like bamboo or cedar for added strength and durability.
Roller Shades
This form of window treatment consists of horizontal strips of fabric mounted to the inside of a track system attached near the top or bottom of the outside frame of the opening that is being closed. These fabrics roll down when pulled by ropes or cords connected to pulleys located above the windows. Roller shades provide privacy but do nothing to help prevent heat transfer through glass.
Vertical Blinds/Retractable Screens
Similar in appearance to Venetian blinds, these types of curtains consist of multiple layers of thin metal slats that can either be raised or lowered by pulling on individual strings attached to the edges of the curtain.
