My hope is this post will help other homeowners who are buying first time shutters decide whether they should get them or just keep doing what they already are; paying high prices at big box stores for vinyl shutters that take 5 hours to hang (a few times), and then struggle during construction until installation day arrives only to realize after going through multiple iterations of design changes, price quotes, building permits, inspections, and purchasing that maybe DIY wasn’t really the answer. I was able to save myself $$$ while spending less than $200 including labor costs, but I had nothing in place for proper installation and maintenance. We live in New York City, but my wife grew up spending her summers in Northern California. She loves beautiful things and wants me to get some gorgeous shutters installed in our home.
I am excited because she told me I could come pick them up after work today. They just arrived this morning, which was perfect timing since they should be put up tomorrow. And it turns out that these beauties came from Shutterboy’s headquarters near San Francisco.

Measure window sizes, heights of windowsills, ceilings, wall surfaces around doorways, walls, floors, stairs, entry points… If something isn’t measured properly then it will either end up being bigger than you planned or smaller than desired… This is especially true for custom made products because sizing varies depending on material chosen. If measuring anything to scale or to measure exact measurements is possible use those instead; otherwise take photos of every aspect you wish to cover with shingles or vinyl siding. Most manufacturers provide detailed drawing templates which allow precise measurement of areas or dimensions of interest. Be sure to check them thoroughly prior to ordering anything. If you find yourself confused after having a few meetings try looking online or asking customer service to verify details. Some companies offer measurements in inches, centimeters, millimeters, metric units, feet & yards, etc. Also consider installing “window rulers” outside the actual frame of the window. These inexpensive little tools can save you hours of hassle during construction. The majority of my projects involve multiple rooms since each room requires unique trim options due to different floor layouts and rooflines. Since every project is individualized, it doesn’t really matter whether a particular company offers dimensional lumber, plywood, engineered wood panels, OSB, MDF, drywall and tile. As long as you know exactly what goes where and the total cost, it won’t matter. Each job has different priorities and needs, therefore it pays to speak with several potential vendors until you determine who makes sense for your project.
