Even though vinyl window shutters cover these imperfections, vinyl won’t hold up well to long-term use since it’s porous material. If it gets dampened down for a prolonged period of time the pores will develop holes due to trapped rainwater in the fabric. Most vinyl materials allow air to enter around those pore areas, leading to significant damage and eventual deterioration of the entire shutter assembly. As for durability of the vinyl style, the surface material used in these type products may wear away quickly if improperly installed/maintained. And although a few select vinyl fabrics are suitable for outdoor applications without problems when properly maintained, none will keep up well once subjected to severe climate conditions.
On the contrary, wood panels are extremely durable. Unlike most other non-wood products, wood only ages gracefully instead of deteriorating over time. They typically stay the same color and texture for decades. They’re impervious to environmental stresses causing minor discoloration, cracking, warping, rotting, peeling and splitting when treated correctly. Properly applied stains can extend the life of these panels considerably, sometimes lasting for generations.
