This post will take us from basic concepts like window coverings, through some important safety considerations regarding shutters, and finally to a few different products that work well for both residential and commercial use. I’m going to go ahead and assume that you already know how to install shutters, but this should be useful regardless of whether or not you’re a seasoned installer.
We can divide shutters into two main groups: vinyl and composite material. Vinyl comes in many shapes and sizes; however, the vast majority fall into the category of “sliding panels made mostly of aluminum extrusions. Sliders are generally used on exterior windows and doors for privacy and security purposes and come in various lengths and widths. They tend to weigh less than other types of blinds because they contain fewer parts. Composite materials include PVC plastic and fiberglass sheets which may be woven together to form shades called draperies. These are often found on sliding glass patio door systems. Both types of shutters offer benefits and drawbacks depending on the situation you find yourself in. We’ll talk about those next as we walk through the steps of installing them correctly.

1) Consider weatherproofing your home prior to installing your windows. California Clients often ask me “what is the difference between a standard roller shutter verses a vertical blind?” They usually assume because they are both made of cloth they must be similar products but they’re actually quite different. Standard Roller Shutters offer some advantages over Vertical Blinds but you have to carefully consider which type will help you achieve your ultimate desired result.
Here’s a quick overview of both types…
What Is A Roll Up Window Shade?: When you roll up these shades you simply wind them up until they cover your entire viewport area. Once rolled all the way up, you then lock them into place and secure them to the frame. The shade is held in place with hooks and eyes along either side allowing you to move it around easily. These are a popular choice for people who like having full control over their viewsport while providing protection from unwanted sun shine. Most shades come with cord locks which allow you to extend the length of the cords as long as you wish. Some of them have pull chains attached at the top end making opening and closing the shades easier than traditional window shades. Vertical Blinds: Also commonly referred to as Venetian Blinds, these are basically panels hung inside a track system that slides across your window and opens/closes depending upon whether or not you push it towards you or away from you. In this article, I will go through some California Shutters trends for the next 4 years to help homeowners decide which type would work well in each home.
We recommend installing motorized shutters in areas of water penetration like walls, windows, roofs, entry ways, around swimming pools & hot tubs, etc.. We do this because they eliminate potential issues with manual operations and allow us to control them remotely via email/SMS messaging apps. They operate quietly without making large noise vibrations or sound levels similar to those of other types.
What should be noted however is that unlike traditional roller shades which only use pull cord systems, these can be operated using remote technology to automate shade operation via wireless smartphone applications & mobile devices, eliminating the need for cords or cables. Most models include “smartphone remote touch controls” which allow users to easily manage them directly from their smartphones while away from home. If the homeowner wants to manually adjust the blinds then they simply must enter a specific command from there device. All shades come equipped with batteries.
How Do Shuttles Work?
Motorized shutters include 2 motors one inside the housing and another outside the window frame that operates either independently or together depending upon the model. When electricity goes to the unit, it turns both motors on simultaneously and moves across the track system causing the window glass assembly and slats to move up or down. The movement happens automatically every few seconds or minutes. Because most shaders contain magnets and do not glide along a wall surface like regular rollershades, motorization is necessary to achieve smooth automated sliding action.
California Shutters have 3 different kinds of tracks:-
1. Fixed Track: These shades consist of a fixed length (usually 10 ft). A single rail runs the entire width of the shading along the baseboard and side jambs. Each end cap attaches a bracket that holds the rails of the track.
2. Horizontal Roller Assembly (HRA), Vertical Roller System (VRS): HRA consists of horizontal rails held above the window opening by support brackets called Jams. VRS tracks consist of vertical rolls attached directly to the jamb supports allowing them to slide horizontally.

Wood shutters are made of solid lumber like Pine or Cedar but often times they contain engineered materials, composite cores, veneer finishes and other components.
This makes them less expensive than vinyl products but sometimes the price does include quality components.
In general they provide excellent insulation properties and will reduce heat gain while maintaining privacy.
Vinyl Shutters are manufactured entirely of extruded PVC plastic material which offers great strength and durability. They come either flat or rolled up into cylinders for use. These types tend to be less expensive than wood because they require less labor during construction and installation.
While both materials offer unique benefits there is no perfect solution; each comes with tradeoffs. For example, wood shutters usually cost significantly more per square foot than vinyl windows. However, if you live in areas with harsh climates these shutters can withstand higher temperatures and provide better thermal protection. Also, wooden shutters typically won’t leak water whereas some vinyl models can collect moisture in humid conditions.
For those considering vinyl shutters, keep in mind that most manufacturers are only offering roll down style models. If your home design includes French doors, slider or operable windows these units will limit your options considerably since they cannot be installed horizontally across multiple openings. Another factor is window size. A smaller unit is easier to install and requires fewer cuts to fit properly. But larger models generally can support longer sills making them more stable and more durable.
When choosing between the various styles of wood shutters, consider whether you prefer a single piece model or multi-piece system. Single piece systems are available in many designs allowing you to pick the color and texture that fits best with your décor. Multi-piece shutters are constructed similarly except there is a separate frame for every panel instead of just a few frames for the whole house. Some homeowners enjoy the increased versatility of this type of model and find that having different sizes available helps with customization.

California shutters come in many different styles including plantation style, casement, sliding, roman blinds, roller shades, vertical wood blinds, Venetian blinds, pleated shade, honeycomb shades, accordion shades, cellular shades, woven shades, woven bamboo, honeymooner, louvered, faux wood blinds, custom made window treatments and other unique designs that I haven’t mentioned yet.
So lets get started:
1) Wood Blinds:
Wood Blinds, whether they’re made of real lumber or veneered particleboard, are among the most classic types of window coverings available today. They provide a clean look, but they aren’t always ideal because of their tendency to warp after years of use. However there’s no question that wood blinds still remain popular.
2) Roller Shades:
Roller shades are great for providing privacy while keeping your view unrestricted. If you live in a hot climate like Florida, then a roller shade is probably your best bet. But keep in mind that roller shades don’t work well in cold climates, so you’d better check first if you live somewhere else. Also note that they tend to be heavy. So if you have a small space, you should consider going for something lighter such as Roman Blinds or Pleated Shade instead.
3) Sliding/Casement Windows & Doors:
This type of windows and doors offer the easiest way to control light levels, temperature changes and air circulation inside your home. However, these types of windows can cost quite a bit of money to buy and install. So unless you really love them, I wouldn’t recommend buying one just yet. If you’re considering getting a pair of casements though, be careful that your existing windows won’t interfere with the movement of the sliders. Casement windows usually swing outward, which makes it necessary to remove the sashes from the frames in order to fully slide the slider. And while you’re removing those old sashes, be extra vigilant to watch your fingers.
