Many people install vinyl windows instead of traditional wooden ones because they think they won’t get splinters, but they often wind back up getting them anyway…
They’re also relatively inexpensive, costing anywhere from $800-$1,000 or less, depending on size and type. They usually come with either a lifetime warranty or 50 years’ worth of warranties against warping, cracking and peeling. But most are made mostly of polyvinyl chloride foam sheets glued together, which isn’t great for the environment — especially since PVC breaks down quickly when exposed to heat or sunlight, releasing toxic chemicals like dioxins and phthalates into soil and groundwater.
California style shutters are typically made of solid lumber, rather than particle board or fiberboard laminated panels found on many cheaper products. Solid wood tends to be more stable and long lasting than those types of materials. But they aren’t always quite as practical on hot days and can cost several times more per square foot than vinyl versions. And while they offer beautiful finishes that are nearly impossible to duplicate yourself, they sometimes suffer from issues with paint fading after long exposure to certain weather conditions.
While there’s no official standard definition, California shutters generally have slats wider than 1/2 inch whereas vinyl designs only go up to 3/4 inches wide. On average, California shutters should be 15% wider than regular windows. Vinyl models tend toward 8% widths. Standard measurements include 7 feet x 5 ft., 10 feet x 4 ft. and 12 feet x 2 ft..
But the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. “If you live in areas like Phoenix that experience extremely high temperatures during summer months, then the wide slats of California shutters help reflect some of these rays,” says Jason Pippin, founder and owner of Shutterboys.”
Another reason homeowners prefer California shutters is that they’re easier to clean. Unlike vinyl options, whose glass panes must be scrubbed thoroughly each day, wood shutters get washed without having to worry about getting water inside and causing mold problems.

In order to get started with this tutorial, first you will need to find some inspiration photos of existing shutters, whether they be residential shutters or commercial shutters. Next thing is finding a way to visualize them and figure out what size they would like.
To help visualize the measurements, I found a great online tool called SketchUp Pro which helps build 3d models of things quickly and easily without having to buy expensive software. After you have built your model, then you should take some pictures of it and measure each window frame in person. This step really helps ensure accuracy. Once we got all of those measures we used the same formula that was taught in class, in other words we measured each window frame, divided by 8 and rounded down. This gives us the dimensions required to determine the width of every single pane of glass. We will use these dimensions to calculate the actual measurement of the panes of glass to come up with our exact sizing requirements. Then we just plug everything together and voila!!! A perfect fit.
Now lets talk about color options. Since our windows already exist, we cannot change the paint colors unless they match perfectly. If someone wants to replace their current vinyl siding, then yes, they could go ahead and install new white aluminum siding but why bother. Instead, they should consider custom painting a beautiful shade of blue, green or yellow. If someone wanted a unique accent wall, they could pick any color they want (within reason) and paint them whatever color they desire. These can become wonderful focal points in your home or business.
