They weren’t able to get them shut because of the weight of rainwater hitting the bottom edge. So the next thing we saw was plywood. Then they went to aluminum with no way to attach it properly.
They ended up having to go through multiple iterations until they found the perfect combination. They finally settled on wood and steel shutters which would provide protection against heavy precipitation while still being easy to operate in the warm months when we were entertaining visitors.
So here is the point of this article. If you live in Northern VA like us, you probably won’t see many homes in your area without wood shutters. They are beautiful, durable, functional and affordable. The only downside is they take time to install correctly and require professional attention and skill.
