Rule 1: Have 2 people working simultaneously. A lot is going on while making repairs or changing windows and shutters especially since many components must be handled by both hands. While one person holds the pieces in place, another screws, clips, removes nails, or hammers away. Safety first, use good judgment and practice caution.
Rule 2: Keep fingers out of blind openings. Blind ends often trap small items or cause injury when opened and closed repeatedly. Make sure your hand and fingers aren’t caught between slats when opening for ventilation.
Rule 3: Use a helper only when necessary. Even professionals rely upon helpers when large sections of trim are being moved around. If you feel the job needs help, hire someone who knows what he/she does. Your eyesight isn’t strong enough to see everything that happens under those coverings. Someone else would appreciate having a third pair of ears to hear what could otherwise be lost behind the fabric.
Rule 4: Do not remove shutters until completely dry. Wet weather makes wood expand which causes problems when attaching metal parts. Once shingles dry install shutters immediately afterwards for safe storage. It helps keep moisture inside the walls.
Rule 5: Be careful when handling hardware. Always protect yourself from splinters, saw dust, and sharp edges. Don’t risk getting cut just because you have no idea what’s behind the covers. Never assume anything regarding what lies beneath those panels. Ask questions, take notes, and pay attention.
