In this post I wanted to cover some of my favorite ways of installing custom shutters on windows. If you live in a warm climate like Southern California, there will be no doubt which direction to go.
We use 2 different types of brackets depending on whether you want a flush mount bracket or recessed. A recessed mount would allow your window to retain its original shape. For most projects, we recommend a flush mounting solution, since this type of design will prevent water damage and mold growth around your opening. If you want to install multiple sets of shutters, I recommend making sure they are installed correctly because once they get wet, they won’t come back dry again without a complete renovation project. We suggest going through professional companies for installations. They understand all aspects involved with building, including the proper materials and methods used. When doing DIY home improvements, always make sure to ask questions regarding safety procedures, especially in regards to handling glass breakage.
1. Window Frame Bracket Installation (Recommended for single hung style window frames.)
This method requires drilling holes along the top edge of the frame. Attach your brackets to these drilled openings. The reason why we recommend a flush mount system is simply due to the fact that this installation leaves less material exposed in order to avoid moisture issues. However, if you are concerned about having the appearance of your house “blacked” out when the shutters aren’t opened, then consider adding hardware cloth or other similar fabric to your top edges in lieu of a solid color. In general though, for those who prefer a flush mount setup, then we highly recommend a white or light colored shade.
2. Custom Shower Curtain Rail Installation (Recommended for shower curtains or vertical blinds).
If you are considering hanging vertical blind or curtain rails instead of shutters, please keep in mind that you must first remove the existing track/barrier that currently holds your blinds. Once removed, attach the rail to your window frame via screws. The same steps outlined above should apply. Make sure to check with your builder if your specific model does not include this feature.

I am going to be honest here, these shutters are expensive, but they will pay for themselves many times over with the amount of energy savings. They really last forever with proper care. This will be our 3rd annual update to these guides. Last year was our first try at this series and I am happy to see that people still find them useful despite some slight changes since 2017. We started with the basics in my “How to Buy Wood Products Made Better” post which provided general information regarding buying better made products without spending tons of cash on them but rather finding unique solutions like those found through Shutter Boys® California shuttering.
We then moved onto installing shutters in 2018 which was a bit different than typical installations because California shuttering must follow architectural specifications for windows and doors that often aren’t available online. These specifications vary by state and locality and thus they are rarely discussed online.
In 2019 we tackled energy efficiency considerations including solar gain in homes and commercial buildings that were already built. Since most California shutters provide excellent energy efficiency properties, I wanted to get a little deeper into the science behind why California shuttering should help homeowners save money while doing their part for climate change awareness.
Finally, in 2020 we added another dimension: Color Trends. I had mentioned earlier that color trends influence everything else. If that is true, then how does color influence style? In the past few years, Instagram became widely known among digital content creators due to a feature called “Stories.” Stories was added as part of IGTV’s November 2018 update — allowing stories to have audio, video, images and text. In my opinion the main reason people purchase vinyl roll down shingles from places like Lowes/Home Depot/etc is because those dealers sell “instant gratification” thinking customers who only care about saving $$$$ upfront while disregarding long term savings. Also due to poor installation techniques most people end up cutting corners when installing their vinyl roofing which leaves it vulnerable to warping & tearing causing leaks after just months. Even worse, these companies usually leave the original seams exposed leaving holes for air leakage and moisture ingress thus allowing mold & mildew growth ultimately compromising structural integrity & damaging roofs. These things take years to happen and once they begin occurring they’re very costly to repair. On top of that, due to their chemical composition vinyl material shrinks & expands depending on temperature & humidity changes making it susceptible to damage from wind gusts blowing rain water onto the surface. Some of these problems could easily be avoided completely by choosing high grade solid walnut plywood instead, which is known worldwide for being the highest quality building material available in addition to having excellent acoustic properties thanks to superior density (1 – 2 lbs). Solid Walnut Plywood is naturally anti microbial meaning no musty smell even after being left outside unprotected and it does not absorb moisture thereby requiring little or no additional waterproofing measures beyond a regular good exterior paint job. Other advantages include higher strength, longer life expectancy, greater resistance to fire, rot, decay and insects, and easier maintenance.
