Shutters are probably the most common exterior window covering choice amongst home owners nowadays. They come in many colors, styles and shapes. So which type should be used to increase curb appeal? Here’s some handy information to consider for selecting shutters.
Style.
There will always be different types of style for every house or condo. One thing to think about would be coloration, whether it being a traditional grey, white or red or green, then going onto the next step. Some people like to keep to colour themes, whilst others prefer no specific theme but just go with random choices because they seem to suit everyone. When making selections, this is something to take note of; as well as, keeping it consistent through out the whole building. However, sometimes homeowners simply love having a certain colour scheme. If this happens for you, please remember to check for insurance purposes.
Color.
This brings us to shades and tones of colours. Again, the colour palette could vary from owner to owner. For example, someone who feels blue around themself likes light blues and greens whereas someone else loves bolder yellows and oranges. Think again about color schemes and pick one or all depending on preference – whatever suits you most. Remember though to select only neutral tones to avoid getting overwhelmed in choosing color combinations. As a little side tip; I believe orange is my favorite color and I am partial towards using bright/orange hues – hence why I chose the photo above. I find myself doing this most often on projects that are smaller than 10 square metres. Measurements play a huge role in determining size. A rule of thumb for windows is: double the width, times the height gives a rough estimate of the required length of shade, although of course it depends on personal preferences. Take measurements first before installing and try to stick to these figures unless otherwise specified due to changes in materials, design or construction. Also try to get a professional measure up or speak to the builder regarding the actual measurement requirements.
Installation.
Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
Wood shutters offer many advantages including affordability, energy efficiency potential, durability, quality control, customization options, ease of maintenance and repair, and resistance to damage from fire, insects, weather, vandalism, termites, and mold.
Vinyl shutters come highly rated as being affordable but lacking in some areas like cost, long life expectancy, lack of insulation capacity, fire resistant properties and high temperature capability. They are typically made from PVC vinyl material which only lasts 15 years without proper preservation measures applied, unlike solid wood shutters which can go well past 50+years depending on preservation method. All wooden products will rot eventually unless properly treated with preservation chemical products designed specifically for this purpose.
In addition, while both types of California Shutters can be used interchangeably due to similar construction materials, they each possess different aesthetic qualities which should influence your choice of style; Wooden California Shutters are often preferred because of their warmer appearance versus coldness appearance of vinyl shutters. Wooden shutters tend to appear darker than vinyl shutters and can become slightly stained during use over time. Vinyl Shutts tend to have lighter colors. If you prefer a cleaner look then consider choosing wooden shutters rather than vinyl ones which will help protect against water penetration and stains caused by pets, children or spills.

Premium lumber costs more than regular cut lumber and is less dense therefore heavier and bulkier making them harder to transport and work with.
