Our Verdict: Our verdict would be if I was building my own home then yes probably go with shutters because most people do. California shutters come in many different styles and materials. Some manufacturers produce wooden shutters which provide beautiful looks without needing to be painted every couple years. Other manufactures offer faux finishes like fiberglass or vinyl options. No matter whether you prefer traditional wood style shutters or modern designs, they should always be installed correctly for longevity. Below we will discuss some things to consider while choosing your next window coverings.
How Much Space Do I Need? If your windows go beyond 8 feet wide then your home needs custom designed shuttering. A lot of people assume because our homes are small spaces, this isn’t necessary or applicable to them but it actually is. When installing blinds, draperies, roller shades, vertical curtains, or plantation shutters we recommend measuring twice and cutting once. Measure the width of each opening and the height of the highest point on either side. Add these measurements together and divide that sum by 2. The result will tell you just how much space you could accommodate shutters. For example, one measurement would read 1 foot x 10 inches = 10 square feet = 16 sq ft per inch. So your total square footage would equal 4 x 17=68 square feet of windows. Since most windows today measure approximately 12×12 or larger than 16sqft/square foot of glass area we suggest installing 3 or 4 full length shutters for your entire patio door space. Our average size for our best selling patio doors is 15″ X 13 ½ “or 48.4X47.2 inches. Most customers will get away without having to install double shutters unless you live near ocean shores or rivers. Double shutters work great since the top layer protects against rain or snowstorms. However, if you live north of Seattle Washington or south along the coast you probably won’t need anything other than single window covers. As you shop around keep in mind if you decide to replace your old shutters, remember to order a special size to fit your replacement panels correctly. Many companies offer custom built size kits which include everything you need including brackets, clips and handles plus everything else you need to attach your shutters.

There are different types of shuttered available today. Each offers benefits and drawbacks depending upon which type you select; however the basic principles remain the same regardless of material used. When choosing your options, keep these things in mind to ensure proper installations:
1). Material Type
Wooden, vinyl shutters offer the most durable materials. Vinyl shutters tend to be slightly less expensive than wooden shutters, but wooden ones will usually hold value better over time. Wood shutters are typically more expensive, though, due to the amount of work required to install.
2). Installation Method
Most shutters are installed through the use of brackets and hinges. However this requires additional hardware and tools, and often leads to unsightly gaps around windows and doors. A newer method uses screws instead of hinged parts. This makes for faster installs, but does not allow for easy removal when necessary.
3). Material Thickness
Thickness refers to how close together a series of slats are placed on top of each other. Thicker panels have fewer openings per square foot, while thinner ones have more. For example, 2x4s are considered thicker because they’re made up of four pieces, while 1/8″ plywood would be thinner because it only consists of one piece.
When considering thickness, it’s important to take into account how thick your wall is. If you live in an area where snowfall is common, then you’ll want to go ahead and opt for thicker products like 3x6s, 5/8ths and 7/16th to help prevent siding damage in case of heavy precipitation. On the opposite end of the spectrum, wood shutters will often perform well enough against a thin brick facade without having to go any further in terms of panel size.
In addition to these guidelines, the type of window frame that the shutter will be mounted on plays another key role. Some frames are designed to support heavier loads than others.

We often get questions like “Wood or vinyl shutters?” We typically answer this question by saying they both provide great advantages and disadvantages. If you’d really love to dive deeper though I would suggest getting some personal recommendations because every situation is different. A rule of thumb we tell clients is to go with the option that will match the style, color scheme, windows/doors, etc. of your home. That said, below are 10+ things to consider while planning either vinyl or wood shutters for your home. These points are simply meant to help simplify the buying experience. Each case will be slightly different and everyone needs something unique to them but hopefully these tips will prove useful to guide you towards success.
