Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
California shutters are used today because they offer the perfect blend of beauty, strength, security, durability and value.
Wood shutters are available in different finishes like Oak Hardwood or Mahogany; while vinyl shutters come either flat or textured finishes.
Both types of shutters provide great style options including traditional plantation shuttering which was popular during 1900s to 1930s in USA, French Quarter shutters which offers architectural elegance along with privacy, Victorian or English Tudor shuttering that looks good in country houses, modern farmhouse-style, contemporary styles or classic country styling.
In this post I will talk about installing wooden shutters versus vinyl, and why both kinds are still highly demanded among homeowners around the world.
Vinyl California shutters are typically made of fiberglass reinforced resin and painted white. They usually feature an aluminum trim piece attached to the outside edges of the panel frame. These panels are often manufactured in roll form and then cut down the middle.
These are sold individually, but sometimes also bundled together in sets. Some brands are offered in several colors. However, most vinyl shutters tend to wear out after only five years so replacement is recommended every four to five years.
On the other hand, solid wood shutters are constructed of real wood and are finished with oil stains or water repelling varnishes. Many manufacturers use engineered wood products such as plywood instead of real wood lumber; however, these panels are less expensive than wood. They are generally installed using fasteners which penetrate through the boards and nail head caps are commonly used to cover holes left behind. Because each individual board weighs approximately 50 pounds, the cost per square foot increases considerably if you buy multiple panels. Solid shutters should be repaired periodically depending on exposure and weather conditions. Since moisture plays an essential role in preserving the life span of wood exterior products, regular maintenance is required to maintain high levels of humidity.
If properly maintained, solid wood shutters can last 20 years or longer, making them the ideal choice for homes located in coastal areas prone to frequent hurricanes and tropical storms. Solid wood shutters are relatively heavy and can weigh anywhere between 40 and 80 lbs/sq ft depending upon thicknesses and sizes chosen.

Double panels offer greater insulation than single panels but they are slightly heavier which makes them harder to install. So why would homeowners opt for double panels? We’ve seen several different reasons for this decision including increased privacy, noise reduction, energy efficiency, durability and aesthetic appeal. Some companies will recommend against installing double panels because it’s easier to work around window openings while cutting openings for single panels. But if properly installed, double panels provide better protection from heat loss through ventilation gaps. As mentioned earlier, double panels aren’t really recommended for homes built prior to 1978 unless you’re certain your building has no cracks or other opening along walls or ceiling. They should be placed adjacent to larger panes in order to cover these gaps and keep air flowing inside. If you decide to go with double, make sure you select vinyl or aluminum frames, not wooden ones since they tend to warp after prolonged exposure to rain and moisture. And remember, most manufacturers do NOT allow returns once products have shipped.
The market continues to expand with high end brands taking advantage of larger glass sizes. These windows offer incredible views of nature or city life. There remains strong interest among homebuyers who prefer modern design aesthetics like minimalistic lines, clean profiles and sleek shapes. However, you’ll still find traditional options available today as well. Many customers are choosing “high tech” designs made from tempered or laminated glass. Tempered glass offers added strength, resistance to breakage and improved thermal shock properties versus regular sheets of ordinary glass. Also, many people enjoy the soundproofing qualities offered by laminated glass. While it is possible to achieve good acoustics without a special lamination treatment, this type of “sound deadening” coating helps reduce rattling noises when moving furniture or appliances across floor surfaces. For those seeking a less expensive alternative, some builders now utilize fiberglass instead of real wood trim to frame windows and doorways. Fiberglass isn’t nearly as attractive or durable however. To help improve appearance and quality control, builders may use polyurethane resin coatings on exterior siding materials such as plywood, metal deck and brick.
