Malverne was founded on January 15th, 1922 by Edward C. McLean and his sons James E. McLean & Robert B. McLean. They started working alongside each other, building fences, barns, barn doors, gates and farm equipment. When they became tired of farming and decided they wanted to sell some items instead they opened a store where they sold products like hardware supplies. Their shop grew until they had enough space to rent another location next door which would become their first showroom. As far back as 1992, Shorter began making custom orders for commercial buildings including schools, hospitals, casinos, government facilities and office buildings.
