This week I had the opportunity to speak with a couple homeowners who wanted to discuss some ideas they came across while remodeling their home. Both homes featured wood shutters installed, but both homeowners felt like they could be improved upon. So after talking through several options and concepts they decided to go with motorization for added functionality.
While this project was completed in late summer/early fall 2019 I thought I would take a few minutes today to walk you though what I did in my own kitchen. We will focus primarily on a custom design I created for a homeowner in Holly Springs, Mississippi and then I will touch on a similar project done in a condo in downtown Atlanta.
I started this project by first taking measurements around the window frame. Once those numbers were established we moved forward with measuring the width and height of the windows themselves. Then once those figures were set we measured from the top edge of each window down to the bottom sill of the window. After doing these steps we took our measurements back to the drawing board. At this point we knew exactly where everything should line up and where it needed trimming.
After making these adjustments the next step involved designing a template for cutting out the material. For this particular job I chose to use pine for the shutters because it was available locally for me to purchase and install. Pine is actually quite common in the South and Midwest so finding materials shouldn’t be a problem.
When choosing which style of shutters to order I wanted something unique and different than anything else on display in the area. I ended up going with the “Painted Wood” style because it offered just enough contrast to stand apart without being too busy. When ordering your shutters remember to specify the type of hardware that you prefer along with color choices. If you’re unsure of which types of hardware you’d love to include feel free to ask us. We’ll gladly work with you in determining which ones are ideal.
Next up you’ll get to see pictures of the finished products in person which makes it easier to visualize exactly what’s happening inside your house. I’ll show you photos from the front side as well as the sides of the shutters so you can really understand how they fit together.
