This week’s guest on “How Do They Make These Things?, was Dr. Stephen Jones, cofounder of WOW Technologies and author of How to Create Your Own Product Line Using the Internet Bookstore Business Model. He talked about his book and some of his research findings. WOW Technologies developed a system that creates high quality content, produces books through Amazon publishing, distributes via bookstores, delivers the digital version of these books anywhere around the world. Dr. Jones says this approach is used successfully in many markets across Europe and Australia.
Stephen shared an example of how he created products to meet specific customer needs, then took advantage of economies of scale. The end result was a business model that generated $12 million in revenue after 10 years while operating virtually without overhead; in other words, they had little profit but they did generate millions of dollars of revenues. Well to be honest we only offer 2 types of wooden shutters in our lineup, Hardwood or Veneer. We don’t sell wood shutters in composite panels because our customers tell us they prefer real solid pieces of timber rather than veneered panels made from thin sheets of plywood. They feel that the quality just isn’t the same. We would agree that timber panels can sometimes look cheap and artificial. For this reason we focus exclusively on either Solid Hardwood or Solid Laminates, our other offerings are always laminated products, whether they be Veneer Wooden Panel Shuts or Composite Panels.
Vinyl is the cheapest type of paneling available today. However, there is no way around it that vinyl will crack, peel, fade, warp, rot, warp or otherwise deteriorate after several years. Most homeowners who buy vinyl paneling expect their windows to be replaced every 10-15 years. So while they save $$$ initially, over the long term you are paying more for upkeep then saving anything else.
Wooden shutters come in many different thicknesses and styles and we recommend choosing ones that fit your personal taste. A thicker wood shutter is not necessarily better though. Our recommendation is to go thinner first then work your way up. If you find yourself constantly having to rehang them due to warping or shrinking over time try switching brands.
