Their products include shingles made of cedar slats designed to look like traditional wooden shutters. So far the company sells only to residential home builders; however, CEO Steve Ault told CNBC Make It he’s aiming for mass production sometime this decade. Ault says his team spends “about six months” developing each batch of shutters and that they’ll sell them for approximately $2 billion annually once manufacturing takes place. He wouldn’t say exactly why his timing seems optimistic, though, saying it was just a matter of good luck.”We’re going head first,” Ault said in an interview. “If we keep doing what we’ve been doing since day 1, then nothing should go wrong.”

If you are planning to install shutters yourself then the first step would be determining which type of window coverings you want. There are many choices available for homeowners including vinyl blinds (roller shades), wooden slat blinds, fabric blinds, and Roman blinds among others. Each style offers different benefits depending upon your personal preference. If you prefer the traditional feel that wood slats provide then that type is probably ideal for your situation. However, if you like the flexibility of being able to roll back and forth the roller shade is great choice. For those who don’t care for the aesthetics of fabric, wooden, or roman shades they can opt for the vinyl blinds instead.
Here’s a few tips that we hope help you get started choosing the correct products:
1. Measure:
Measure every single opening in your home to ensure that each shutter fits perfectly. Make sure you measure the width and height of your openings. Once you’ve measured make sure that there isn’t anything obstructing these measurements. For instance, if your doorframe sticks out past the wall you want your shutter installed then you may run into issues trying to measure accurately.
2. Window Size:
Window size plays a big role because if it’s larger than necessary the shutter won’t fit properly. Also, make sure that your shutter covers your entire glass pane and does not leave any gaps. If there is any gap left in your shutter that could result in damage. If your shutter leaves any part of the glass unshaded the sun can still penetrate through and cause problems down the road.

Windy conditions pose another problem when considering shuttering your doors. Make sure that your shutter will fit correctly without leaving parts uncovered.

What exactly is a shuttered home anyway?! I am curious because whenever someone says “Hey let’s go find some shutters” they seem to always be talking about something like ‘a porch screen replacement type deal’ but those aren’t really shutters. While doing research on these various types I found myself being educated about window covering options and started reading everything pertaining to them including magazines articles from trade journals and publications. As I read about various style choices, materials used for construction, colors and finishes I realized just how versatile windows, especially sliding patio screens (yes they were called that too), were as far as personal preferences went.

Cost of shutters – If I’m buying California Shutters from a dealer like Shutterboys, which will probably be around $4k plus shipping cost depending on location, then can you really expect them to work well at a fraction of the price? Probably not but they should perform better than a cheapie DIY job which most people would try. So it pays to get good quality and high performing Shutters. For example a premium shutter costs around $3k installed. However, this includes custom design options so this price could go higher. But at least for me, I would rather spend my own money for something that performs and looks great to begin with. Plus you can always upgrade. Most dealers will offer lifetime warranty against defects.
Installation cost – A lot of companies quote “we install shutters” but that just sounds too vague and they don’t tell us anything about who does the actual installing. We need specifics such as company name & license, insurance info and contact details. And ideally someone who actually installs shutters regularly. Otherwise why are they offering it? Also the cost quoted usually only covers labor, parts/supplies, and equipment rental fees. They don’t include materials unless specified otherwise.
Websites and brochures – Many dealers offer free websites. These generally include basic information about products, pictures, sizing charts, prices, contact details and some customer reviews. Many companies charge extra to provide additional content like videos, PDF documents, etc. Some sites may allow you to add photos and videos yourself while others will take care of uploading these automatically. Websites often come bundled with sales brochure packs. These typically contain lots of photos with brief descriptions of each type of shutter, sizes available, colors, styles, finishes, brands, models numbers, and specifications. Sometimes manufacturers include sample projects to show different types of installations. These are nice because you learn about various applications.
