We’ve talked about sourcing and manufacturing strategies at length elsewhere on this website, but suffice it to say that we expect to continue seeing increasing interest in regionalism and sourcing products close to source, particularly for high value residential applications. We’re also expecting that some manufacturers who specialize in custom production will seek ways to produce customized units closer to customers through partnerships and alliances. Whether made of wood sourced domestically or imported, engineered hardwoods are rapidly gaining popularity for several reasons—not least among which is cost savings. For example, according to the International Association of Timber Frame Manufacturers, “a typical engineered hardwood frame costs 15% less than comparable pressure treated lumber.” Additionally, using exotic woods requires additional processing steps that may increase costs.

In this post I will walk you through my recent experience installing motorized shutters with Shutterboys, covering everything from finding quality materials, to choosing a style, to getting them installed properly.

I should be really upfront about something. For this post I am going to use material made specifically for outdoor applications as an example of what types of products exist.
