We had originally built our house with tongue & groove studding, which made installing shutters relatively straightforward—you just measured along each seam line and then cut along those lines through both pieces of material. But after watching several episodes of Handyman TV show Home Made Simple, we learned that you could actually skip the seams. Instead of having to measure every single seam, you simply mark off every 2 inches along one surface and then align that marking onto another surface to get accurate cuts across multiple surfaces—which is exactly what we did. We chose shutter manufacturers who would provide the extra measurement/cutting templates so you’d only need to purchase them once rather than four times per project. So far we haven’t had to buy one template yet.
Of course, measuring accurately and cutting smoothly around corners and door frames takes practice. If you ever find yourself struggling with a tough spot, take some time to figure things out. Try out different techniques until you feel comfortable with it; then move forward to tackle other parts of the job that you struggle with. One thing to remember: Always aim toward perfection. Be willing to spend a bit of time practicing the basics first, though; if you nail down your technique early on, you won’t have to worry about losing sleep trying to perfect details after work hours. As it turns out, it really does pay to save time during those tedious but seemingly necessary steps.
