Best California Shutters Spring
Best California Shutters Trends for 2020
If you’re planning to replace your current shutters this spring, you’ll see some big changes happening across the country. We’ve seen an increase in vinyl, faux bamboo and other options that allow you to customize your shutters without sacrificing style and quality. And with advancements like digital printing technology, you won’t find yourself stuck ordering your next batch through phone order anymore.
We’ve rounded up the top 10 California Shutters trends for Springtime below. Check them out, then take advantage of these tips to ensure you pick the right style for your home.
1. Vinyl
Vinyl was a huge trend back in 2018, but it still remains strong today. If you love the classic look of vinyl, you’ll be happy to learn that it’s making a comeback.
Vinyl offers great style, durability and affordability, plus it looks fantastic on nearly every type of window. Plus, you might already own several items made from vinyl that could work as replacement parts.
2. Faux Bamboo
Faux bamboo is the latest addition to the world of window coverings. While traditional blinds block sunlight and offer only basic functionality, bamboo shades provide both light control and protection against harmful UV rays.
3. Metal Shades
Metal window covering solutions are perfect for those who prefer a clean-lined, modern feel. These blinds are often available in sleek aluminum, which gives the appearance of being more expensive than their plastic counterparts.
4. Wood Blinds
Wooden shades are another way to achieve a rustic yet elegant appeal in your space. Wooden slats come in various colors and designs, giving you plenty of choices to match the overall aesthetic of your home.
5.
Motorized California Shutters Spring
According to statistics released by the National Association of Realtors 2018 Housing Affordability Survey, only 44% of homes purchased during 2016 had air conditioning. By contrast, 90% of homes sold in 2007 did include AC units. These numbers paint a picture showing Americans moving away from buying houses without central heating/cooling because they simply cannot afford them. But with the rising cost of energy and utilities around the world, there will be more demand than ever for home solutions like motorized windows that provide full control for both heating and cooling.
Today we take a look back at 10 products and brands — including three California Shutters manufactured and distributed by Shutter Guys — which represent cutting edge technology, innovative design and superior quality that will serve homeowners well through the next year. We’re confident that each of these items will become staples of spring shopping lists around the country. Our experts took an extensive amount of time researching and testing each item, providing detailed reviews with photos detailing the product characteristics and information about the technology used to manufacture each model.
We hope these guides help you find the perfect solution whether it’s replacing broken shutters in your home or installing new ones so you can enjoy cooler summer nights indoors.
For example: 1. ShutterBoys® Casement Window Treatments – A wide array of custom colors allow homeowners to pick and match their desired color scheme for every window pane on their home; 2. Hunter Douglas ® UltraView™ Series Windows – Energy efficiency and comfort come together in an elegant package with these top rated triple glazed, high-performance double hung windows; 3. Rolco® ProLine® Customizable Wood Shades – Each shade panel includes four different options allowing owners to customize their privacy needs to whatever suits their personal preference the moment they buy, install or replace windows; 4. Sunbrella ® Polyester Fabric Curtains & Drapes – Made from 100 percent polyester material, this fabric looks great throughout seasons.
Buy California Shutters Online
First things first, though: If you live outside the US, you’ll probably be better served buying a custom made window coverings order through one of the hundreds of companies who provide that service, rather than trying to DIY.
This article focuses primarily on the home market because that’s really what I’m interested in, but you could just as easily use this info to select the type of commercial shutter you want instead.
In many ways, these four basic shapes represent the core idea behind all California Shutters—they offer privacy while still allowing light to enter freely and naturally. But they come with unique benefits and drawbacks. They each work well inside certain environments and situations, or against specific kinds of windows, but none are perfect every single place; it depends on the design details involved.
If you’ve read my other blogs about shutters, you already understand the basic premise: Each type offers unique advantages and disadvantages depending on the conditions that surround them. It takes careful consideration to figure out whether one will ultimately meet the needs you expect. And this isn’t something you should take lightly. Shuttering a property effectively requires a thoughtful approach and lots of research.
But let me tell you why these 4 options are the ones people gravitate toward most often anyway…and some tips for making those choices easier.
1 Horizontal Slat
Horizontal slats are classic and dependable—no matter what kind of house you live in, no matter what type of window surrounds them, horizontal slats will generally fit like a glove. They are great for homes designed around an entryway and kitchen/dining areas. When paired with the appropriate window treatments, however, they can help keep noise levels down, especially late at night when kids go to bed, when guests arrive, or when pets become restless during busy hours.
Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
Vinyl is typically considered to be one of the least expensive options but does lack some of these benefits, especially durability.
Which style of window coverings should I get?
Before deciding which type of shuntting material you’ll use, determine what function you’re hoping to achieve, whether aesthetic appeal, security, privacy, climate control, insulation, sun protection, sound management/reduction, or other.
If you’d like to keep things basic and simply block sunlight while maintaining natural lighting indoors without sacrificing ventilation, go with wooden shades. These classic styles feature slats of varying thicknesses to provide a light filtering effect, along with louvers to further regulate airflow through vents located behind each louver. Because of this design, wooden shutters allow enough air exchange for proper comfort but maintain enough shading to protect furniture and valuables against fading caused by heat and moisture. Additionally, because a majority of wooden blinds and shades are made from plantation grown trees, you won’t face any risk of deforestation. For those looking for something truly unique, try custom handcrafted designs that blend modern functionality with traditional beauty. While you still have plenty of choices to make, you could end up choosing an incredibly beautiful yet functional addition to your home.
What type of wood will my house take?
While most people prefer solid colors or patterns, custom color selections can really enhance the appearance of both your exterior and indoor spaces. When selecting a colored shade, consider several factors beyond just your own personal preferences, such as the age of the building or surrounding neighborhood’s character. If your property was built after 1980, chances are you’ll find yourself in a community composed mostly of older homes—a fact that’ll affect the overall feel of your space. Conversely, neighborhoods full of newer houses will usually offer better diversity and thus, may benefit from using different materials and textures than those found in historic communities.
Professional California Shutters Installation In Spring
Springtime is in full swing — which means homeowners across the country have begun planning their next projects around outdoor living spaces. Perhaps your condo will become your backyard retreat or perhaps your dream house will include a gourmet kitchen, master bath, spa suites, pool deck, covered terrace, garden courtyard, fire pit area, & entertainment space. Whatever your project dreams are this season, they deserve high quality materials such as custom made wood shutters. ShutterBoy™ offers premium California style Shutters & Wood Blinds featuring unique finishes like Cherrywood Blends, French Walnut, Mahogany blends, Honey Oak, Ebony, Redwoods, Black Ash, & many more exotic woods. These wood blinds come ready to install from our own manufacturing facility with everything including hardware kits required, measuring instructions, cutting patterns & templates, & professional installation recommendations provided. Plus unlike competing companies, Slatterhouse only sells real genuine wood products, and uses no polymers whatsoever. For example, Shutter Boy Premium Series Wooden Slider Windows offer superior thermal properties due to pure real lumber construction, while Polymer Slatwood Blinds cannot withstand seasonal changes because they melt down. And finally, since every homeowner’s requirements vary slightly, we provide FREE SHIPPING for orders $250+!
Installing wooden slatted shutters is typically less complicated than vinyl options thanks to no adhesive issues. Vinyl tends to warp & peel, making them an unattractive choice most of the times.

The most common question I receive regarding building green is “how long does it take”. Most of this happens during construction, especially around framing windows and doors. Because of these questions many people believe building green involves waiting until after they move in. While it makes sense that things happen quickly with moving in day projects, most projects should really begin earlier than that. Most people wait until the final stages of construction because they feel it requires lots of effort but it really needs to begin sooner rather then later. If you’re going to live in a home built without proper consideration of how to properly insulate walls, floors and roofing systems, why would you expect those problems won’t continue once you’ve moved in? When thinking about insulation in terms of costs, it isn’t necessarily just about paying $100/sf. Often people fail to consider the additional cost related to repairing problems down the road. Even adding 20% to 40% to your monthly utility bills due to heating issues shouldn’t come as a surprise. By getting started early, building green takes care of several aspects of sustainability. Whether a homeowner chooses to go Green through using Energy Star rated products or by installing renewable power sources will depend upon personal preference and budgetary constraints. Regardless of which approach they use, being sustainable begins well before the day a contractor gets paid, finishes and leaves. You’ll find that our website contains information relating to this topic on pages under the tab entitled ‘Tips’. There are hundreds of examples of ways homeowners have gone green prior to finishing construction including replacing appliances, upgrading lighting fixtures and choosing windows that allow proper ventilation to keep air in instead of letting heat escape.

But, what type of shutters should you install? Here are a few guidelines to help you decide the ideal style for your next project:
1. Consider window size first. Window sizes vary widely from state to state, and it pays to understand the rules governing them. For example, windows cannot exceed 24 inches wide; however, the maximum height varies from 8 feet above grade to 10 feet depending on location.
2. Next, think about style. Do you prefer traditional plantation shutters featuring decorative trim around the base or contemporary styles like flat panel, which feature no frame? Traditional options tend to cost less per square foot and often come with added extras including hardware, screens, shades and even automatic rollers. On the flip side, modern shutters usually run $100-$150/square foot for basic installations—but they’re available in nearly endless designs, shapes and colors. They’re often easier to clean and maintain, plus, if you need repairs, professionals can handle those jobs quickly and inexpensively.
3. Finally, consider price point.

WHAT ARE California Shutters?
1. Select a Style & Design
Whether you’re installing solar panels or shades, choosing something aesthetically pleasing will lead to higher usage percentages. Shades are often used specifically to provide privacy, as well as additional sun blocking capabilities to reduce excess heat gain from your roofing system. If you’d prefer to see some sunlight through, consider adding clerestory windows to achieve this result. Not only are they visually appealing due to their exposed beams, but it enables natural cross ventilation to help maintain indoor temperatures. One way to determine if this approach would work for your property is to ask yourself “What part of my day does the least amount of sunlight pass through?” Then take note of the type of building materials the area is made of. Do you notice cracks appearing through areas of exposed concrete? Does paint peel off of walls located near windows? These things indicate that certain types of surfaces are better suited for receiving full exposure to the outdoors.
2. Consider Material Quality
Many factors go into selecting proper materials to ensure lasting durability. Some examples include: fiberglass versus vinyl; plastic frames versus metal; fabric textures and colors. Depending on your situation, you could opt for different combinations of one of these attributes.

LOOKING FOR California Shutters? WE CAN HELP!
California Shutters come in many different styles, shapes, colors, sizes, materials, finishes, and designs. There are so many options available that choosing which ones would be perfect for your home may seem overwhelming! We want to help simplify this decision process so you can easily find the California shutters that fit perfectly inside your house.
Here’s a breakdown of each type of window treatment:
Casement Windows
Casements windows slide horizontally and vertically on tracks within the frame of the window, allowing them to operate like traditional sliding doors. Casements typically offer great energy efficiency because they allow natural light through while blocking heat. However, casement windows often have issues when it comes to noise control. They tend to rattle when windy conditions blow around outside the building causing the track system to move. Additionally, casement windows have poor air sealing qualities, meaning you’ll lose valuable conditioned air to the outdoors. If you’re interested in adding casemates, consider installing them above garage windows instead, since they are easier to seal. Casement windows should only be used on single story buildings unless they are specifically designed for multi-story applications.
Double Hung Window
These types of windows feature hinged sashes that swing outward from both sides. Double hung windows offer better insulation and ventilation than casemate style windows but they are less common today due to the fact that many homes built prior to 1978 had casement style windows installed. Double hung windows are still a good choice for older properties as long as they aren’t in areas with extreme climate changes. These windows tend to be the quietest of the bunch.
Fixed Window
These windows are stationary and do not open or close. Fixed windows are usually made of vinyl or aluminum and are available in several standard heights ranging from 8 ft to 12 ft tall. A fixed window offers excellent thermal resistance and soundproofing but does not block the sun, making it unsuitable for hot climates. Fixed windows also lack ventilation. Because they cannot be opened, fixed glass units must be fitted with operable hardware that covers the entire opening.
Client Testimonials
“Hello Marco,
“We met Marco just over 2 weeks ago. He was meticulous in measuring the windows and doors on our main floor. It was a very pleasant experience. We decided to go with the high end option of California shutters as they complemented the crown molding in our home. Marco’s crew, Tony and Keanu installed the shutters yesterday quickly and efficiently. They are great guys. We are absolutely delighted with how clean, bright and beautiful our home looks. The shutters make a huge difference. We have dealt with a lot of contractors in our various homes, and this was probably the best experience we have had. I highly recommend Marco and his team.”
“I recently had the wood shutters installed by Marco in my 2800 sq ft new built house. Its a corner lot, and there were 33 windows and a patio door to be dressed up by the wood shutters. The price was very competitive and the quality was superb. Marco and his team did a great job and the whole installation was completed in one afternoon. The wood shutters are of good quality, the finishes are smooth, adding great value to the already beautiful house. I am very happy with both the product and the services provided by Marco. Highly recommended.”
