There are a lot of different aspects in choosing a quality shutter system like; frame colors, frame material type(wood, metal), hardware types, options, sizing, and functionality are factors which must be considered prior to ordering.
For example, if a home owner already had custom wooden windows installed and has no other issues than needing to replace them with modern aluminum frames then most people would simply replace those windows without doing anything further. However if in this same scenario the homeowner needs to improve the air infiltration of these windows due to poor sealing then choosing better sealants along with adding screens could help reduce heat gain through the windows.

Traditional Wooden Blinds: These classic wooden slatted shades typically range from $4 -$7.50 per square foot depending on thickness. They come in either single layer fabric or double layered material which gives them both strength & flexibility. Most commonly found on residential properties they work well and are affordable but they tend to wear down quickly because every day exposure to wind knocks away small pieces. If you have kids these would be ideal, if not this is probably a bad choice. Traditional Wooden Blinds are often confused with traditional roller blinds due to similar color schemes, shapes and construction techniques however they are totally different. Because rollers use metal brackets/tracks instead of cloth loops they move freely allowing them to close tighter together, reducing light passing through without obstructing view from outside. Traditional Roller Blinds are usually cheaper than any other style of wooden blinds and are still readily available and often times easier to install without professional assistance. However their only issue is the fact they get damaged easily. The reason being the brackets used to hold onto the tracks break causing the track assembly inside the sash to fall apart leaving large holes to be patched with tape. Over time this creates dust traps that become clogged leading moisture & rot through the wood frame. Additionally if the shade becomes loose over time the whole system falls apart making the repairs costly or impossible once again requiring professional installation.

What exactly are California shutters? They’re basically vinyl window treatments designed specifically for plantation style homes.
There are many different types available ranging anywhere from $800-$30000+. Generally speaking, however, California shutters come in 3 general sizes depending upon the size of your opening(s). Each type of California shutter is made either “overlap” (or continuous), semi-continuous or no overlap/single hung. Overlapping California Shutters provide a maximum amount of light control over a full sized window while keeping rain water outside; Semi-Continuous style shutters allow partial light transmission but keep moisture inside the structure; Single Hung Shutters offer little light blockage yet still keep rainwater inside without blocking heat transfer like other styles do. All styles of California Shutters can be ordered both vertical and horizontal giving customers flexibility with placement.
Why Use them?: So often people ask us, Why would I use California shutters instead of traditional Wood Blinds or Vinyl Venetian blinds? Simple answer: Because they’re better than those other options.
Wood Blanks cost 2x-4x the price of real wooden slats. Most manufacturers cut down trees and ship the raw stock to China where the finished blank is then shipped back to America. At the end of each day, these blanks arrive at warehouses packed in pallets and stacked high waiting for shipment. When they get there, the warehouse manager takes apart the whole stack of blanks, sorts them, stacks them again, checks them twice.. and puts them back together ready for shipping.

Not every type of window treatment needs this sort of extra attention, though. For example, many types of blinds are highly effective insulators that won’t really benefit from added ventilation unless there’s a strong breeze blowing outside that the windchimes in the back of the blinds would pick up. The ideal combination would include both ventilated shutters and blinds, but if either isn’t possible then you shouldn’t worry about anything else since Sienna plantation shutters aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
WHAT ARE California Shutters?

As an added bonus, most California Shutters come complete with custom hardware designed specifically for each California shutter’s appearance to ensure maximum aesthetic appeal and durability.
How Does A Cali Shutter Work?
Cali shutters work well because they have no moving parts unlike traditional plantation shutters and sliding patio doors which move back and forth, causing issues like squeaking or rattling when opened or closed. When installed properly during manufacturing, the shuttering material does not flex or rattle; therefore minimizing this issue altogether.
When choosing windows and doors, homeowners should pay attention to whether the window/door frame will accommodate the opening and closing mechanism of the door and whether the glass (or screens) will easily fit within the framing. If necessary, these components must be specially ordered or manufactured according to standard sizing recommendations.
For example, if the California shutter’s slats extend beyond the inside edge of the window sash, it could interfere with both the opening/closing mechanism of the window and result in unsightly gaps around the top and bottom edges of the window. Similarly, California shutter frames are typically 1″ smaller than their corresponding framed openings. Therefore, installing them correctly requires cutting larger sized opening frames slightly shorter to allow proper fitting.

How We Got Here…
For those who aren’t familiar, I am the owner/operator of Shutter Boy Company. My company creates premium quality custom built shutters in the beautiful state of California. Our products come in many different styles and colors to fit any style home.
What’s Next?
This winter will be my 4th season installing custom built shutters across Northern California. Each spring season brings new customers needing a solution for replacing old vinyl windows. Many customers ask me “what would be better than Vinyl?”. And honestly, nothing beats the beauty of real Wood. For homeowners this usually translates into either being forced to deal with paint issues on their existing window frame OR spending thousands of dollars to install hardwood siding that takes years to fade away due to weather damage. So they keep putting off the decision because they simply do not have the cash flow available during these seasons to replace everything at once. As someone working inside the industry, I’ve seen every type of window installed including some crazy stuff like fiberglass. But there was always something lacking for most people; a nice smooth finished surface. After researching the market for months I came upon an interesting problem – People wanted to use wooden doors but couldn’t find a way to get them installed properly. A lot of contractors had no idea what the correct way should be to hang doors and couldn’t provide proper instructions. Some builders would put nails through the doorframe instead of screws which created terrible gaps around where the nail went straight through creating air leaks. Other builders used wood glue without providing adequate drying times which resulted in warped frames. Another common issue I see is improper leveling of floors after hanging the doors. When this happens, water pools underneath doors and then slowly creeps through cracks around hinges. If you look closely enough you’ll notice small amounts of rot starting to develop along hinge lines. Eventually this leads to a rotting out of both the sill plate and floor joist causing huge problems for everyone involved. Most building codes only allow 30% moisture content for a wall cavity. Anything beyond that and the wood is considered weakened. This is a serious issue since the building envelope includes things like walls, exterior sheathing, insulation, framing and roofing.

What’s New For Us In 2018 & Where Do We Go From Here…
In 2017, we began working on installing custom built shutters with different materials like aluminum, vinyl/wood composite, steel, and glass along with various other unique designs we had created specifically for individual client requests. Our clients requested products outside the traditional frame options which made us go back to designing some pretty cool new styles. Many of these ideas went through several iterations until finally landing upon something that felt good aesthetically; while still being practical for the weather conditions they would experience. So far 2018 continues this progression of innovation, but there’s always something else evolving in front of us 🙂
So what exactly did we learn from the past few years? Well aside from adding additional types of doors and frames there isn’t really anything specific that jumps out since we continue to test each and every idea we have. I believe that it takes quite a bit of experimentation just to find those things that feel best both functionally and aesthetically. But we’ve definitely learned a lot about the market and have seen things evolve dramatically over the course of 4 short years.
Here’s What Happened Over the Last Year…
During 2017 we saw an increase in orders due to increased demand around certain materials including Aluminum, Vinyl Composite / Wood composites, Aluminium Frames, Steel Framing which is great because it enables more customization than ever before. We started focusing heavily on glass door systems last year, mostly utilizing frameless sliding panels instead of framing. And we noticed a shift away from wooden framed shutters towards vinyl composite material. We also got a ton of questions regarding metal shutters but most buyers weren’t ready to move forward yet. The main reason why so many houses use wood shutters these days is simply aesthetic preference.

“I recently had the wood shutters installed by Marco in my 2800 sq ft new built house. Its a corner lot, and there were 33 windows and a patio door to be dressed up by the wood shutters. The price was very competitive and the quality was superb. Marco and his team did a great job and the whole installation was completed in one afternoon.
