Vinyl shutters come in a wide selection of colors options, sizes and styles making them easy to incorporate into almost any design scheme whether you’re planning to install a few or hundreds. As mentioned above, most vinyl manufacturers allow customers to customize designs to meet unique client needs.
They typically only care about the appearance which makes them good for applications where aesthetics matter most. However, since these shutters aren’t generally engineered for long term structural integrity, you’ll be required to perform annual inspections and checks. When installing shingles, apply multiple layers starting top left corner and work down with additional coats until no gaps remain.
Be careful around corners and edges and cover every surface thoroughly. If there is still an area uncovered during final coat apply 2nd or 3rd coat to completely fill gap.
There should be absolutely NO light coming through after completion and it must hold paint well for years under normal conditions without fading.
Remember not ALL shutters provide weather protection the same way. They range in quality and material types from cheap vinyl to high priced real Hardwood Shutters. Please check the description carefully before buying as they vary widely. Most come with at least 10% “wiggle factor”.
This means they move slightly when exposed to wind pressure.
The better quality shutters will have almost zero movement. If any visible rattling occurs in moving areas of the house, try another model.
All shutters need to be cleaned regularly, especially if used outdoors. A mild detergent solution usually does fine but DO NOT USE WET SOAP!! Wash both sides of the glass, inside and outside.
DO NOT PUT SHUTTERS OUTSIDE AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN CLEANED UNLESS YOU ARE SURE IT WILL BE RAIN FREE!! Cleaning shutters indoors usually consists of wiping away dirt with a clean rag, this leaves a sticky residue behind that prevents proper curing resulting in premature deterioration.
Wipe dry immediately.
Some brands claim UV protective properties, but none guarantee them because testing methods differ so widely among brands. Use good ventilation (open doors/windows) whenever painting shutters, whether covered or uncovered.
