Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
In 2012, I wrote my first article for Shutterblogs when shutters was still just starting to become popular. Back then, vinyl had not yet come onto the market.
My original inspiration came after reading this post “California Shutters & Exterior Sheets – Your New House Fence” which detailed some tips for adding extra insulation value to your house or condo. The author suggested covering your exterior walls with shingles and/or panels made of ‘vinyl covered sheathing material’ for the winter months. At the end he mentioned that many companies sell these materials locally. He gave no information regarding their price, quality or other details. (If anyone knows anything about those specific products please email me your comments!) Unfortunately, I did not follow up until 2015; long after the vinyl panel trend faded away.
Fast forward to today — 2018. After watching several DIY videos, and having friends who installed them, I decided it would be nice to own myself some high quality wooden California shutters.
I ordered some samples and had them custom cut at my home improvement center to determine my preferences:
1) Style #3: A solid oak bottom track, flush mounted with 3mm thick plywood sides. These seemed like a great choice, but ended up being overkill since they couldn’t be easily removed during cleaning without damaging the wall surface beneath. They required cutting through 2 layers versus 1 layer with more expensive options (#2a below). Additionally, all 4 pieces looked exactly alike while requiring 5 different parts per side. My wife loved the sample color combo of natural ash veneer and dark brown stain over white painted pine trim, however the real deal shipped plain textured white paint instead of stained.
2) More cost effective version featuring only 3mm plywood sides and standard, flanged hardware: This style was perfect because it fit every door opening size and looked good enough without needing to get creative with finishing touches. However, the actual shipping dimensions differed slightly than advertised due to additional thickness added in the middle of each piece to compensate for expansion gaps around windows and doors. We ultimately found most of our openings could be adequately filled with this style.
