I am pleased to announce that I will be returning home to my childhood town of Fresno this summer after several years away. When you move back to your hometown, it seems like everything around you changes. So many things that you took for granted seem different now. A lot more people speak Spanish than English around me all day long on the freeway. People who live nearby tell me they “know when we” moved because the sound changed from the constant drone of traffic outside to silence inside the house.
So why am I telling you this? Well, the reality is that while most of us are able to adapt just fine, sometimes it takes some adjusting. And then, sometime life gets harder again, and you must decide whether or not to continue staying put—or to try something else. For me personally, moving back was challenging since I loved living down south so much. But being honest, part of me realized that I could probably find work anywhere in America. My family grew apart while I lived thousands of miles away and was often busy starting careers and building families. Yet, no matter which way your career path bends, I knew that leaving the only place you ever called home would feel bittersweet. Leaving is always difficult, but knowing myself well enough to realize that leaving feels especially sad when someone moves somewhere you love, makes it real a bit easier to go through every step of the departure ritual. We had talked briefly before he left about getting into custom shuttering and I told him that I thought it sounded interesting so I did some research online to see if anyone was doing anything similar and it looked promising. Then came January 2020, and since his first job search didn’t pan out, he decided to take matters into his own hands and call up the company himself. Little did either of us expect that almost immediately he got an offer for a full-time position working with shutters while still trying to get settled on his next steps.
