Before doing anything else I decided to visit another contractor who had just shuttered my windows. I wanted to get an idea of what was normal installation practices. He told me he would be shutting them down and then stapling the frame edges together as he went along.
He did this without having ever visited my house. So, not knowing really knew anything about installing screens but thought “okay, good” it sounds like common sense. Well, it turns out it isn’t and I could tell immediately after pulling back the screen I felt something different.
I am no expert by any stretch but these installations were terrible. From poor planning, inconsistent sizing I should say, and sloppy workmanship it looked bad. Not only that but the staples holding the joints tight weren’t close enough which made a huge difference in air circulation around the window unit. They were basically slapping each other against the building trying to hold themselves together.
For those unfamiliar with screen installation the first thing they do is cut the material to size leaving excess hanging past the top corner of the frame. Once it is cut, they will staple those seams in place. Then they apply some tape to the seam to help keep the joint firm as well as prevent water intrusion. Some installers even use silicone caulk because it prevents condensation forming in areas.
After everything is taped then they go back inside and use screws to screw every single corner to the wall studs which will ultimately secure both sides of the doorframe/windowjamb. If the frame was not sized properly before cutting the material, then obviously this step won’t happen until after you hang the entire system. At that moment you either have to stop, correct the problem, or pay someone extra to come back out.
If you ask most people how long it takes to properly install screen doors, they typically reply anywhere between 2-4 hours (or sometimes longer depending of course). Most contractors have an average of 3-5 days available per week during the busy summer season. During spring & fall many contractors only take 1 day off due to weather conditions. However I found many contractors that said they couldn’t schedule a weekend since it is usually booked solid.
