California Shutters Installation Tips
Before starting any project, take note of the following tips. They’ll go a long way towards ensuring you end up with beautiful windows and doors!
1. Measure Your Windows & Doors First
When installing California Shutters, you must first measure your openings carefully. The reason being is that if you don’t measure correctly, the size of the shutters won’t line up properly and could leave unsightly gaps. Also, if you buy custom sizes, you’ll want to ensure they fit perfectly inside of your frame. For most installations, we recommend measuring every 4 feet (12 inches). However, if you’re working with a small space, like in a dormitory style apartment, the measurements may vary depending upon the width of each opening and the height of the ceiling.
2. Use the Right Tools
If you’ve ever tried installing vinyl siding, you know just how frustrating it can become trying to use those tools. It’s no different installing shutters — especially if you don’t have proper equipment. Here’s why…
First things first, make sure you have a pair of pliers and screwdriver handy. These are essential to remove stubborn screws and other pieces of hardware. A good drill/screw driver combo would work well, but you can always invest in something nicer if you’d prefer. Next, you’ll need an extension pole (optional), which helps reach high areas. Finally, you’ll need a level (also optional). All of these will come in extremely handy while setting up or removing the shutters.

Best California Shutters Dumfries
California shutters come in many different styles like roller blinds, plantation shutters, louvered screens, accordion style doors, sliding patio door panels, bay windows, and French folding shutters. Depending on which type of window coverings you choose will depend on the shape of frame. For instance, accordian shutters typically use aluminum rollers while plantation shutters tend to be made of mahogany plywood frames. Some models include casement options. Casements provide privacy but are often harder to install due to weight and size.
If you decide to go with a vinyl or wooden screen you should expect them to come standard with hardware kits including brackets, hinges, latches, locks, rods, screws, clips, anchors and mounting strips that fit together to mount the shutters to the inside and outside of each side of the opening. If you purchase a window covering kit they usually already include these items. They could vary depending on the model and company.
For most homes with single story walls this does not pose much hassle since only one wall needs to be opened. Larger buildings however would require several walls needing to be opened simultaneously. When installing larger shuttering you will either need 2 people or 1 person and a ladder, but the latter method tends to be cheaper.
Most companies offering shutters offer custom sizes, colors, wood species, types of framing and accessories like valances, cornices, and other trim pieces. Most shutters will arrive ready to hang and installed.
Our Recommendations: Our recommendation is to buy the largest size shutters available. While smaller sized shutters have less material to work with there is always a tradeoff. A 5×8 footer costs $3-$4 per square foot. If you are trying to save every dollar then you may find yourself regretting choosing a small size after you see how big a window opening gets once everything is hung. We recommend going large enough to fill the width of the house. Also consider adding some decorative accessories to spice things up a bit. These range anywhere from $5-$30 depending on the design, color scheme and materials used.
Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
In this article, I will be sharing some facts about both vinyl shutters and wood shutters, along with my thoughts on which would be better suited for certain situations and homes/condos.
I am going to focus on the differences between wooden California Shutters & Vinyl California Shutters.
I hope my analysis helps you decide whether you should buy wooden or vinyl shutters.
Wooden Cali Shutters
Pros
• They look beautiful when installed correctly and professionally. If you install them yourself they will end up being crooked, uneven, and ugly.
• Wooden Shutters come standard with the ability to close all windows and doors at once, making it easier than ever to protect your home against intruders while keeping heat inside during those winter months. These shutters are available in different sizes and styles, allowing homeowners to customize their house according to their own preferences.
• Wooden shutters are great because they provide protection from UV rays and insects without blocking sunlight from reaching other parts of your property or the outdoors.
Cons
• Wooden shutter systems can cost thousands of dollars depending on size and style.
Vinyl California Shutters
Pros
• Vinyl California Shutts offer many benefits to homeowners and renters alike. One big advantage to vinyl California Shutts is that it offers homeowners the ability to easily clean it. Unlike wooden shutters, vinyl shutters are stain proof, water resistant, and won’t warp. Vinyl shutter prices vary depending upon the type of window treatment desired. Some popular choices include roller blinds and Venetian shutters.
• Another advantage is that these shutters allow natural light through while still protecting your home’s exterior walls from rain and snow damage while offering privacy. Some vinyl shutters have screens built into them so that you can block out any unwanted visitors who try and get into your space.
• Vinyl shutter products are typically less expensive than wood shutters, but they aren’t perfect either. Vinyl California shutters tend to break down faster than wood shutters. The lifespan of a vinyl shutter depends mostly on the quality of materials used.
WHAT ARE California Shutters?
California shutters come standard on most homes built after 1993, but they aren’t exactly cheap.
