In this article I will talk briefly about my experience installing shutters. Over several years I personally installed hundreds of homes with custom made wood shutters. If you get great service you really feel like you are getting value for your money. Shops will work just fine, but sometimes they struggle and miss spots, run long or short so it’s nice to be able to go straight to someone who knows exactly what they are doing. My main focus was always quality customer satisfaction in everything I did. When you consider you could spend 2 grand and 5 months working on a home project, having 1 hour labor cost less than $100 makes me proud everytime I install something. Even though a lot people would prefer it, most homeowners should expect a 3 day window during which doors aren’t allowed inside. We’ll schedule that around school schedules or other non-residential days. Once installed, it usually takes 7 weeks before the first paint touch ups to dry. (I recommend taking pictures each week). As far as quality goes, I recommend the Kawneer brand because no matter what company, nothing lasts forever. Some companies try to sell you their own products which ultimately turns into cheaper material or inferior craftsmanship. A good example I had recently was trying to find some shutters for a sliding glass door. Two different dealerships told me they sold them locally, but both said they wouldn’t carry/sell any Kawneer shutters. After talking to another salesman he convinced me that these guys only carried certain brands. They then went ahead and tried to sell us some cheap vinyl shutters instead. Not surprisingly they ended up giving me a bad deal since they obviously weren’t familiar with the materials or process. Luckily they gave me the correct information to help me find superior shutters elsewhere.
When you take delivery of custom Made Wood shutters remember it’s going to come flat packed, you have to assemble yourself unless you pay extra for assembly. Most of the times I’ve seen folks put those together incorrectly and end up making a mess. Make sure you check everything out carefully and read the instructions thoroughly prior to assembling.
