WHAT ARE California Shutters?
California shutters were invented in 1972 by Tom Kornberg who was inspired to develop the design after working around his home in Palo Alto. “I wanted something warm, bright, welcoming in my living space after returning from Japan where I had just spent several months studying Zen Buddhism.” He began developing ideas about what he liked from different homes while visiting other architecture enthusiasts across America.
After being invited back to work for George Nakashima, whose company started producing custom built furniture for homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Mr Kornbarg became fascinated with the designs used in Japanese houses. At this point he was already familiar with window coverings called sakuga screens and figured they would be ideal for providing privacy without blocking natural light—which seemed like a perfect idea. After some research, Mr Kornberg found a unique material made of thin strips of bamboo woven together which was easily cut down to fit various sizes of windows.
When Mr Kornberg returned to America, he took these materials with him to try them out for himself. When he did, he immediately fell in love with the beauty of their simplicity and uniqueness. They offered a stylish solution to provide both warmth and functionality. And from then onward, Sakuga was born.
In 1979, inspired by the minimalist Japanese aesthetics and influenced by contemporary American style, Tom opened SAKUGA SHUTTERS Inc.. His primary focus shifted away from residential projects but still continued designing for hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. Since 1990, SAKUGA Shuttles has become one of the largest manufacturers of vertical blinds/sliding screen panels worldwide!

Wooden Shutters—Wooden shingles, shakes, clapboards, and other wooden materials provide a durable exterior and excellent privacy. Wood shuts usually offer great energy efficiency due to their high insulating qualities. However, because they are often painted on both sides, they tend to fade quickly unless properly maintained and treated. They tend to collect dust during inclement weather, which can result in mildew growth on the inside of the slats.
Closed Cell Vinyl Siding —These vinyl shutters are designed to resemble traditional timber siding and feature aluminum lath strips instead of lumber to reduce weight and increase insulation properties. These shutters typically consist of multiple panels attached together via clips rather than nails or screws, making them easier to move around without damaging walls. Clips allow for quick assembly and disassembly; however, they must remain closed while installed. Some versions use adhesive to hold pieces together, but care must be taken to not apply pressure against the wall when closing the panel. In addition, you cannot remove a single piece from the entire panel, meaning you could lose parts of the design along with it.
