Conroe Homes / Condos:
For those that own homes or condos built since 2012, there is no doubt most people use Energy Star rated windows (or equivalent ratings), Low E glass, high efficiency furnaces, solar panels/rooftop collectors, LED lighting fixtures, dual pane glazing, rain water downspouts, and other energy saving devices. Some newer buildings are adopting ENERGY STAR standards across the board which helps lower heating costs but does nothing for cooling needs.

In this post I am going to walk through some real world examples on how homeowners install shutters. We will go through each piece of the process starting from choosing materials and finishing touches to installing them yourself or getting help from professionals.
We will be taking a step back and thinking about which type of project would work best for different situations and budgets. Also, we will discuss why certain methods of projects might not always meet everyones needs, especially those who would like something custom tailored to suit their specific style requirements.
For today though lets talk about which material(s) you should use for your shutters.
I hope the information shared will help the homeowner understand whether they should try DIY or hire professional craftsman to assist in the process (or both).
The first thing you should consider is the cost of materials. If you dont live near any large timber mills than you will need to search around for lumber yards/hardware stores or check your big box home improvement store for discounted prices.
We recommend you buy only 1× 2″ x 8′ pieces of cedar since these sizes tend to be available most often. Cedar is actually preferred in many parts of North America these days because it is a beautiful natural material which adds warmth and character while being less prone to warping, splitting or rotting.
Next is finding a great design company. At Shutter Boys we offer several options to fit everyone’s unique taste and style, but what if you just cant decide which looks good?
There are thousands upon thousands of shutter designs and styles from traditional wooden shutters to modern aluminum shutters, faux wood shutters to vinyl shutters, shutters designed with beautiful glass inserts, built ins, and even retractable windows.
The type of hardware used to hold the shutters down varies greatly too. Some people prefer hinges made entirely out of solid brass or stainless steel whereas other folks prefer lighter weight plastic hingeparts. Again, there are hundreds of choices here ranging from basic screws and bolts to fancy ball bearing assemblies and magnetic track systems.
Finally, after deciding on the size, shape, color and design of your shutters; it’s time to get started putting things together.

What exactly does “best Califonria shutters” mean?
California Shutters of course refers to wooden windows which are designed specifically to block sunlight while allowing plenty of natural light in during summer months.
To qualify under this definition, California shutters must be made predominantly from either cypress or cedar lumber. Though they come in different varieties, both materials provide an incredibly durable product that won’t warp or crack like vinyl, aluminum or fiberglass options would. Additionally, the unique grain pattern makes these products appear to glow in certain lighting conditions. They will certainly stand the test of time—and weathering—better than some other alternatives, especially if proper maintenance practices are used.
How do I identify them?
First things first, many people just assume that because they’re called “caliper” shutters, they’ll install easily. However, that’s just half true; while California shutters aren’t usually custom fit, they still take skillful workmanship and attention throughout the entire process to achieve superior aesthetics and strength. As a result, if you buy a DIY kit, expect to pay an extra $200 minimum per window. If you wish to try installing yourself, you should invest the same additional funds in professional consultation and supervision along with quality tools and materials. While most DIY kits offer a range of sizes, California shutters typically only cover 3/4ths width, making full coverage nearly impossible without cutting corners elsewhere. We recommend hiring a highly skilled installer who specializes in large scale shuttering projects. These individuals often charge $10-$50 per square foot. For example, hiring someone to complete 1,500 sf of project could cost upwards of $2,000 depending on the size of your home and other factors involved in the job.
Which style should I go with?
Whether you opt for a classic line-and-finish design that echoes traditional Southern plantation homes or something contemporary and modern meant to reflect today’s lifestyle better depends largely on personal taste. California shutters are available in several types ranging from flat panel styles with slats installed vertically inside the frame, single pane screens with horizontal dividers installed below the panels, and double pannel designs that span across nearly four times wide.
