What are Shutters in General?
California Shutters are used like blinds with special hardware designed just for them! They provide privacy, security, light control, thermal insulation, sound dampening, solar protection, air circulation regulation and many other benefits depending on the design. A few of my favorite designs include plantation shutters, roller shades/trackless systems & vertical sheers.
Benefits of Shutters

Privacy — When closed they block most visibility into the house (windows). Even though they are typically made from solid wood they still allow some natural light to pass through reducing heat gain during summer months. Since they are mostly used for shading purposes they generally come with louvers that automatically close when the outside temperature rises making them great for blocking sun rays while still letting in enough light. Some can be opened completely unlike curtains which only open partway. Roller Shades are similar but are motorized allowing us to remotely raise or lower them according to our needs. Trackless window coverings are usually installed behind glass doors and operate similarly to blinds with slats instead of horizontal rails. These offer greater flexibility than track system since they can slide along the wall. Vertical Sheers are great because they allow us to pull down panels between each pair of panes providing complete shade across your entire window.
Light Control — While shutting out heat gaining sunlight they also keep cool breezes flowing freely in without having to worry about drafts coming in under your door frames that could cause mildew growth due to humidity buildup inside rooms. Depending on what style of shutter you select (slat, paneled, sliding, roller, etc.) you can choose either standard blackout fabrics with opaque color inserts or “translucent fabric” types that use translucent mesh with various levels of transparency. Translucent fabrics offer additional light filtering capabilities but also increase airflow thus increasing overall ventilation. Also remember to pick materials that resist fading especially in coastal areas where UV radiation exposure will become increasingly stronger the further north you live towards wintery climates.
