So, what exactly is a California window treatment? A “California Window Treatment” refers to either a roller shade, Roman blind/chain link curtain or cellular shades. If I had to guess, I’d say most people would assume they mean something like Venetian Blinds, but these products go way beyond this popular style of shading. They cover every imaginable surface on your windows; vertical, horizontal slats, fabric panels and pleated screens. These designs are often referred to as “Roller Shades.”
If you’ve ever seen them hanging around retail stores, those little boxes with metal frames with pull cords attached seem similar to Roman Blinds and Chain Link Curtains…except they aren’t tied together. In fact, they look just like Roman Blinds except Roman Blinds generally use wood strips instead of chains to keep the material taut while the box moves across the headrail. (I’ll explain why below). But unlike Roman Blinds, Chain Links use only 1 piece of cloth (usually canvas), rather than 2 pieces of cloth sewn together, like the other types of curtains mentioned above.
And finally, cellular shades, like Venetian Blinds, use woven fibers to hold back the light blocking mesh. While this design does allow the same amount of airflow as Roman Blinds, because the cells are filled with air, the cell gaps cannot close completely, therefore you don’t get 100% privacy. However, cellular shades offer some advantages over traditional Roman Blinds, since many manufacturers include LED lighting inside each panel, making it possible to control the lights independently of the shade movement. And since cellular shades allow more natural sunlight through, they reduce cooling costs during summer months. Cellular Shades may help lower energy bills during hot days by allowing less heat gain through your glass windows.
In summary: Roller Shades are great solutions for covering large expanses, especially where you want maximum daylighting.

This week I was able to attend the Arizona Builders Association annual conference held in Phoenix AZ. As usual they had lots of great speakers, seminars, and information sessions covering everything related to real estate and construction industries. One session caught my attention because one speaker was talking about solar panels and another panel member mentioned that in his area, he has seen an increase in the number of people wanting them put on their house or building. So, I thought “I haven’t heard anyone talk about Solar Panels yet!!?!” After listening to some interesting discussions, my curiosity got the better me. Here are my thoughts/ideas on why someone should consider going solar now and why going solar will save you money down the road.

1) Energy Independence – By switching to renewable energy sources like solar panels, homeowners become less dependent on fossil fuels. Since fossil fuels are often expensive to obtain and use, the ability to harness clean power through alternative methods such as photovoltaic systems becomes cost effective in many cases. While solar does generate electricity during daylight hours, most states experience long periods of cloudy days due to seasonal weather changes making solar panels ideal for generating electricity regardless of whether sunlight is available or not. Also the sun emits light 24/7 which makes it possible to produce electricity whenever there is enough sunshine to generate sufficient energy.2) Savings Money Down The Road – Going green is good for both human health and wildlife.

California Shutts are available in many different types including vinyl shutters, fiberglass shutters, aluminum shutters and wooden shutters. Each type offers advantages and disadvantages depending on personal preferences and budgets. Some people prefer the ease of maintenance provided by vinyl shutters whereas other customers prefer the style and beauty offered through wooden shutters. Each type of shutter offers unique benefits and drawbacks.
Here is a brief overview of each type of California Shutters:
Vinyl Shutters
Vinyl shutters come in several styles. Vinyl shutters are typically made from plastic sheets and are designed to mimic the appearance of real lumber. These shutters are often made of polyvinyl chloride, also known as PVC. They are usually sold in rolls and installed by professionals who specialize in installing vinyl shuttering systems. They offer great value for homeowners who are seeking affordable home improvements but still desire the security offered by shutters. However, the main drawback associated with these shuttered is that they tend to fade quickly due to sunlight exposure. Additionally, vinyl shutters do well indoors but struggle when exposed to rain or snow outdoors because water seeps inside the shutters from the outside.
Fiberglass Shutters
These shutters are similar in design to vinyl shutters except they are made entirely out of glass fibers instead of plastic material. Fiberglass shutters provide excellent protection against wind damage. Because they are constructed of thin layers of glass they allow plenty of airflow inside homes. Fiberglass shutters are ideal for areas prone to extreme weather conditions. For example, they work perfectly well during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing. On top of being durable, fiberglass shutters are extremely energy efficient. When closed, they prevent heat loss from buildings.

In this post I go over some basic history and terminology for shutters:
First, “California shutters” are custom crafted doors made completely of wood instead of vinyl, aluminum foil, plastic or another material. Wood Shutters come in many colors and styles, however, today most people only use white or cream colored shuttered windows because they blend well with natural tones like brick or stone exteriors. White/cream shutters are typically preferred because they tend to be more subtle than say black which would stand out more against darker siding. Many other color selections exist but usually consist of pastel shades such as light blue, green and pink.
Second, ‘wooden shutters’ are traditionally known as plantation shutters. Wooden shutters used to be popular among homeowners until early 20th century. However they fell out of favor due to the rise popularity of double hung window systems. After the World War II wooden shutters had little value and was considered ugly and cheap for many years because everyone had already moved on to vinyl shutters. Most homes built after that period installed vinyl shutters rather than wooden since people felt these shutters looked better and provided longer lasting quality for less cost. Today wooden shutters are back in style although they’re mostly for collectors rather than everyday home owners who just want something classic yet stylish without spending hundreds of dollars. Wooden shutters still offer a lot of benefits including they are durable, energy efficient and quiet. They help block unwanted heat and cold during both summer months and winter seasons. If properly sealed their lifespan could possibly be decades depending on usage conditions, weather patterns, maintenance practices and paint grade. For example, if painted regularly over long periods wooden shutters will naturally oxidize and show patinas if left unattended. Some newer versions can actually self heal naturally through exposure to sunlight but they aren’t always effective. Another great feature of wooden shutters is that they can easily match your existing house trim and decor and don’t necessarily need to go along side them unless you really want a specific design element such as lattice work around them.

When talking about window treatments, most people immediately picture some sort of blind; however, shuttering products offer something different than this traditional idea of covering windows.
Shutters are made of real wood slabs and engineered lumber pieces, usually made of white oak. They come in many shapes, sizes, colors, textures, finishes, and designs, but they serve several purposes besides just blocking sunlight. Some homeowners use them to cover up drafty doors or windows, while other customers install shades and curtains around their home to block unwanted light and provide privacy.
Cost: You should take advantage of high quality, handcrafted shutters which will provide years of service. Because of today’s economy, prices for these types of shutters typically increase every few months during peak seasons like Christmas and New Year.

Verdict: These shutters cost at least $3000 per 4 ft wide panel in my area, but in a townhouse with no attic space I’d rather spend the extra cash to get top notch workmanship.
If you’re thinking of installing shutters yourself, consider asking friends who’ve had shutters installed recently. Sometimes contractors and tradesmen will recommend a certain type or style of shutter because they worked well in their own homes and liked doing business with them. If you’re considering building custom cabinetry or furniture around a door frame, ask around about shuttered frames—you could save lots of money buying readymade shutter panels that already fit with your design.
