Whether you’re considering replacing your current window coverings with vinyl or traditional wood, we hope this guide helps save you hundreds on the job.
If you don’t already own a screen door for your home or condo we would recommend getting a new model from Screen Door Guys (a company owned by Shutteries). They offer great deals every week through their Facebook page, and often the price goes down after you order them! For example, during the holidays they offered the same type of screens but delivered early to get customers first…and then lowered the price accordingly afterwards since everyone was ordering theirs! If anyone reading knows someone who lives in San Francisco or LA area, please ask them about Screen Door Guy’s delivery service…it’s worth mentioning to people because they really stand behind their work and are usually willing to walk around neighborhoods to deliver doors/screens.
There are 4 types of Vinyl Screens/Shutters made today. And each one offers different advantages / disadvantages depending upon your needs.
1. Standard VINYL SCREEN SHUTTERS ARE THE MOST COMFORTABLE BUT ALSO THE CHEAPEST TYPE OF SCREENS TO INSTALL IN YOUR HOME OR CONDO. They use less material than other materials like aluminum which makes them relatively inexpensive. I have spent my life working on this project since I was 14 years old. It started with a small business called “CALIFORNIA SHUTTERS”. We had no employees but only myself and a few family members helping me install shutters. My dad helped me get some accounts and he taught me everything I knew about shuttering.
In 2014, I decided to move out west and bought a house in San Diego County. After moving in, my wife wanted us to install some shuttered windows. So she hired someone else but they did not understand our style, which meant the shutters looked like shoddy work. So my wife fired them and she got me back to installing shutters again. She then found a friend who could help her find someone to install her custom made shutters.
She was able to get a quote of $8500.00 dollars and she went ahead because she trusted me and wanted to see the job finished and we would be happy together. But the guy showed up with his equipment and said he couldn’t complete the job until next week. He also told her that he wouldn’t charge anything extra because he said I am “THE BEST”. Well my wife and I both laughed at that statement but he continued saying that he knew how to put in the proper shutters and he wouldn’t leave until the job was completed.
My wife agreed to pay him $5000 dollars for doing the shutters and the rest we paid him after the job was completely installed. When he left, he gave us our first bill, which came to around $13800 dollars. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to cover all those bills and I had already invested $6000 dollars in materials for the job, plus another $1000 dollars in labor fees which I had to borrow against other loans just to keep paying this idiot.
So I decided to go ahead and hire someone who I thought might actually be good. A man named John came and took measurements for the home. He then came back and quoted me $10800 dollars to do the entire job.
