I recently installed 3 sets of roller shades in a client’s home. They came back 2 months after install saying the shades weren’t turning when pulled down and wanted us to come back and adjust them again. We went back last week but still had no luck with them working correctly. In today’s world, people spend less and less on home furnishings, but they still expect high quality products to get better value every day. So why would anyone buy cheap materials like vinyl windows and doors? Well, sometimes it just makes sense. If you’re going to replace a window anyway, then why pay twice as much for something that isn’t quite the same as the old thing?
Of course, it goes without saying that vinyl replacement windows and doors are much cheaper than custom made options like wooden ones, which typically cost around five times as much. And since they come with some sort of warranty attached, vinyl is often the obvious choice if you want to save cash but you aren’t willing to sacrifice on your peace of mind. Here’s another point about California Shutters: The fact that you’ll probably only use a few windows during your lifetime shouldn’t stop you from investing in one. Even though these windows won’t really age well, it’s possible that they could become damaged or break down. But if you’ve got enough other investments to worry about, then it’s definitely worth taking care of those problems now rather than putting yourself through the hassle of replacing your windows later.
But what if you live somewhere else in North America? Do you still need California shutters? Yes, absolutely. There’s no way around it if you live anywhere outside of California. Wooden louvered shutters aren’t just for old houses anymore. Today’s wooden shuttering offers a wide range of designs, colors, finishes and styles, including modern farmhouse inspired options, transitional traditional plantation shutters, stylish urban contemporary designs and classic period revival. Most homes these days have multiple glass areas, making them perfect candidates for custom made double hung French hardware shutters or plantation type wooden shutters in various sizes, heights and lengths for each opening. Shoppers often ask us what kinds of weather conditions shutters must meet; we say no matter what climate, the most important thing to remember is durability—something many manufacturers tout with marketing slogans claiming “we live through extreme storms” or “they stand tall against tornadoes.” While hurricane resistant wooden shutters certainly hold up well in stormy situations, the reality is you’ll see little difference between hurricane resistance and regular strength models since only the edges are typically reinforced or braced.

This article focuses on the best types of shutters available and the pros & cons of each type. For this edition of our “Ultimate Guides” series, I will be addressing the question, “What is the difference between wooden California shutters versus vinyl California shutters?”
Before answering this question, I’d like to first discuss some general concepts regarding both products. First off, I would say most people tend to equate shutters either to windows or doors. They typically refer to these window covering devices as being used inside, but they could just as easily apply outside. As a result, they usually end up referring to them as being ‘window coverings.’ However, the majority of the articles written about shutters focus solely on their function as door protectors; however, there are many different styles of shutters including wood ones. So, while we are discussing the topic of shutters, there really isn’t anything specifically pertaining to only one style of shutter when talking about wood shutters. Instead, I am focusing on the general concept of shuttering, which includes several different kinds of shutters.
Now, onto my main point: What is the difference between wooden California shutters and vinyl California shutters. Well, I guess the answer depends on whether you prefer natural materials or synthetic materials. The reason why I bring up this distinction is because the majority of homeowners who purchase shutters are doing so in order to maintain privacy. If you are looking to keep an area more private, then you probably shouldn’t go ahead without considering that it has a lot to do with choosing the correct material for your project.
I mentioned earlier on in the above paragraph that this article was going to address the issue of shutters in relation to doors rather than windows. One of the things I wanted to touch upon in this section of the post was the fact that there actually are two separate categories when referring to the term, shutters: Wooden Shutters And Door Covering. While many people use the terms interchangeably, what they mean actually differs significantly.

There are literally hundreds of different types of shutters available, but they fall under four basic categories; Wood Clad, Aluminum/Aluminum Composite Panels, Vinyl and Solid Color Panel Shutters, which include both Hardware-Based (such as Wooden Blinds), Pole Mounted & Roll Up, Roller Slat Door Style Window Treatments. But each type requires a different approach as far as buying and installing them go. As always, please take this information with a grain of salt since every situation will be somewhat unique and therefore must be approached individually by you. Also, remember that while some of these features sound good or cool in theory, they aren’t necessarily useful for real estate situations. They usually won’t provide adequate heat insulation value or privacy during hot weather conditions. And unless the window faces south or east, they aren’t going to work well against winter winds anyway. So, in short, you should definitely use our guide as just another starting point toward finding a solution that makes sense for your needs rather than blindly following instructions provided in other places.
