In this post I am going to talk about some things to consider while selecting the perfect shutters for your home. First and foremost; the size of the window area. If you live outside the city limits you will most likely be dealing with smaller windows, but even these windows should still get covered properly, otherwise the weather coming through them could easily cause damage, which would ultimately cost you big dollars. So, for example, let us say you have a 3 bedroom house. The first thing you must figure out is how many total rooms there are, then divide those numbers by 2 because each person usually sleeps better without having anyone else awake next to him/her. Then you must multiply that average amount of people per bedroom times 4 plus 1 since every person requires somewhere around 5 square feet of space. Next you take the answer you got above divided by 100% to determine what percentage of your house is considered “living quarters” or bedrooms. For instance, if your house only consists of one living quarter/bedroom of 500 square feet it makes sense for that single family residence to only include 10×30 double hung vinyl patio style shutters. As you continue dividing the areas of your house by 100%, you find out that 50 percent of your entire house is made up of bathrooms and another 20 percent is designated as kitchens. Therefore, it becomes apparent that shuttering needs to address both bathroom as well as kitchen spaces.
If your home was split in half by bedrooms, then how large will each side of the house be split by the bathroom and kitchen? Once again use common sense and remember to factor your personal preference into consideration when determining sizes and designs. If you prefer larger sized windows than your neighbors, for example, you can opt for bigger shutters to keep heat inside instead of being forced to rely upon curtains. Another good idea is to always place your largest window facing east, south or west to capture maximum sunlight exposure. When designing windows you want to avoid placing anything behind them that obstructs light, including walls. Windows that face north are often the least desirable ones due to harsh winter sun exposure.
