We live in Northern California. Our home sits atop a hill overlooking beautiful Mount Tamalpais. We love this spot because it offers us views of San Francisco Bay. In my opinion, I would say go with wood shutters and then decide which direction you want your sliders to face once home. Since most come fully finished, painting becomes optional when choosing wood-based shutters versus metal. Both materials provide excellent protection against rain & snow.
