Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
So what makes me qualified enough to write this article? Well, I installed my first pair of shutters back in 2004 during a house renovation project with some contractor friends of mine. They helped install vinyl siding on the exterior walls which was going to be covered by 1×8 pine boards. We wanted something different than plywood for the windowsills inside the home because I had just purchased a new sofa and I felt like I would appreciate having a clean line around each window instead of plywood.
I ended up installing 8 ft tall solid oak shutters for every single window in the house which worked great until 2007/2008 when hurricane Dolly hit Florida. After the storm I went to remove them and they literally blew away leaving nothing but pieces of board nailed to the wall behind them. Fortunately no damage was caused but after that experience I decided to purchase real wood shutters.
For most residential projects (which usually involve only 2 stories), California Shutters typically come in sizes ranging from 12 x 24 inches wide and 4 feet high, while for commercial installations they can run from 48 x 96 to 120 x 240 inches across and anywhere from 18 to 36 inches high. Depending upon your preference, you will find California shutters made of real wood veneer products, composite materials, fiberglass reinforced concrete or aluminum extrusions. Also keep in mind that they can either be flat panels to cover glass doors, or curved profiles to fit around corners or other architectural details. Some manufacturers offer custom sizing options for your particular job requirements.
