In this guide I will be providing some information regarding my experience installing custom built shutters for clients over the past 3 years here in Guelph Ontario Canada.
I will be going over a few different types of windows including; Sliding, Fixed & Casement Windows
We will talk about which window type would work well with each other, and why they should go together. We will discuss some tips and tricks along the way to help get things running smoothly and efficiently.
Some general guidelines: (this does NOT apply to every project)
• Make sure the house was designed properly
(no gutting walls ect…)
• If possible use the existing opening
• Be aware that most homes have a “wall” around them to keep moisture away (usually made of dry wall/ plaster).
If you do not install a shutter over the ‘wall’ then water will leak through the shutter causing damage to the home.
So if possible try to find a location near the door/window that is not covered by anything like brick or stone.
• Do Not Use Vinyl Shutters
These tend to warp after just 1 season and are the worst thing ever. They are extremely flimsy and are a pain to deal with as they tend to peel, crack/ split and break easily.
They also tend to stick really badly and are impossible to clean without destroying the vinyl.

One thing’s for certain though — these places will all be delivering their products directly to your door in 2022, no matter which state you live in.
If you’re planning a home improvement project, then chances are good that you’ll eventually wind up reading articles telling you that you should definitely get California shutters.
