How do I determine my window openings size?
Your window opening measurements will depend on whether you’re installing fixed, operable or sliding glass doors.
Fixed
If you’re replacing a single door type but still maintaining the same overall layout and dimensions, go ahead and use the standard width measurement. If there’s no existing wall space available, try using these alternative measurements instead:
1′ Wide = 96″ High
2 3⁄4′, 2 1⁄8″, 4′ 8″ tall
3′ 2″-wide by 60″ high = 36″ wide x 84″ tall
Operable / Sliding
For either of these options, measure across both faces of each piece. Use your total length minus 20 inches for framing purposes. If you’re adding a secondary pane on top, include that thickness as well. Remember those handy “rule of 12ths” proportions you learned in math class? Well, apply it in real life. Measure 12 times around your frame; then divide the square root of your total area (12 squared ÷ 16th) into 12 equal sections. Each section represents 24 ¼”. Add 10 ½”. Round down. That’s how many shims you’ll need to put under each panel. Keep track of this count because you only need 18-inch strips of trim board per panel. For example: A total of 48 5×6 panels equals 960 shim locations = 60 shims per shingle.
What materials should I use for my California Shutters?
Wooden shutters tend to hold together better than vinyl ones do when subjected to moisture. Vinyl shingles typically aren’t recommended because they won’t stand up against termite infestations or rot.

1) Measure Your Window Size & Shape
Measure the width and height of each window and calculate square footage (ft²). Then multiply those measurements together to arrive at total square feet (sq ft); this figure represents the area available for windowsills, doorways and other openings.
2) Select A Style Of Shutters
If possible, select shutters based on the style you already like; however, keep in mind that certain styles work better than others depending on weather conditions and placement options.
3) Consider Color Options For Shutters
Consider choosing color combinations that complement existing colors in your space; for example, if your walls are white, go lighter for the shutters. Also consider whether you prefer darker shades to light ones; dark tones work well outdoors but not indoors.
4) Pick An Appropriate Material And Finish
Choose materials that match the overall aesthetic feel and tone of your house. If you’re planning to install wood shutters, pick something that matches the type of woods used in your kitchen cabinets or flooring.
5) Find Out About Local Installations Costs
Depending on your location, costs vary significantly for installing shutters. If you live in a large city or near a big population center, expect to pay around $200 per window. However, if you live outside of a metropolitan area, you might be able to find an experienced installer who does custom installations for less than half of that price, especially since many companies offer special deals during slow times.
6) Make Sure You Have Enough Money Set Aside For Upgrades Or Other Costs Associated With The Project
Before committing to a particular project, determine your finances first. Will you have enough cash saved to complete everything you want to do? Will additional expenses add up? These questions should guide your decisions about which upgrades to prioritize and what types of materials you use.

Doing some research on installing shutters around town will show a lot of different kinds of vinyl shutters, but most people don’t realize that they aren’t actually made completely out of vinyl. They often include layers of plywood which makes them heavier than regular solid pine shutters. Also, many times homeowners find themselves wanting something other than just a straight line between window framing members. Their windows are unique shape, like bay, arched, sliding… and so forth. For this reason you should use someone who specializes in custom installations to get the perfect fit for your home.
If you’re going to buy a real wooden shutter, why not buy an actual piece of wood instead? They offer beautiful looks in almost every style imaginable, without the extra weight or cost of vinyl. They’ll be lighter and better insulators than vinyl alternatives because they’ve got no gaps or seams. Your wooden shutters’ color won’t fade like paint does either, since natural materials age beautifully over time. They’ll also keep your home warm during winter months and cool during summer ones unlike typical shutters, which only allow air inside and out depending upon weather conditions outside. And finally, if your climate changes, your home’s energy efficiency rating goes down with both plastic and metal shutters—but not with wooden ones. If you’re thinking about buying shutters, these are your top options. All of these come factory finished in multiple colors. A few different finishes are available after that, including stained, sealed, painted, varnished, and waxed.
For years I had wanted to put my own spin on my favorite shutter styles and decided to make my first batch of DIY wooden shaders myself. After countless hours trying various techniques, experimenting with glues and finishing agents until finding the perfect combination, I was able to craft a high quality and long lasting material for less than $300 per pair. These shutters are made from American White Pine slats that run approximately 2 inches wide x 1 inch thick. Each Slat weighs 3/4 ounce, making each slider 4 ounces total. This adds strength and stability to the shutter system.
Wooden shutters are ideal for areas with lots of seasonal variation.
