Wood shutters offer many benefits over vinyl shutters. They come in beautiful styles like traditional shutters, plantation shutters (also known as French Doors), and sliding barn doors. And they provide privacy while allowing light to enter through windows. Plus, they’re maintenance free, which makes them ideal for homeowners who live in areas prone to extreme weather conditions. But before buying wood shutters, consider these factors first:
How many windows will be covered? If you only have one window in your home, then you should go with a single panel shuttered design. However, if you already have multiple openings, then you might benefit from using a multi-panel system. For example, with a 2×4 frame, you could cover three different types of panels on each side — 1″ wide, 5/16th thick; 3⁄8″ width, 1⁄2 thickness, and 1¾″ width, 7⁄32′th of thickness.
How big a space are you covering? A large opening, like a bay window, would take several panels of varying sizes to fully close it. On average, 1½″-wide shutters work well for small spaces, while 3–5″-wide shutters are good for larger ones.
Will the area stay closed during high winds? Many shutters include some sort of latch mechanism. These latches help keep windy days outside, but they won’t hold up against hurricane force gusts.
What type of climate does your region experience? In warmer regions, you could use lighter woods. Pine is popular because it’s strong yet lightweight. Cedar is another great choice because of its durability.
In cooler climates, however, you want heavier woods for added insulation. Oak will withstand harsh winter temperatures better than pine.
Is this your primary residence? You probably don’t want to install shuttering for every room in your house. Instead, focus on the main living areas of your house.

We live on beautiful sunny beaches in the Pacific Northwest, but, like many people around the world, we love living in places with temperate climates like Southern New England, Arizona, Florida, and parts south. When we purchased this house in 2018, we wanted something unique, yet practical, to replace the old double glazed sliding glass doors that had been installed years ago, which really just made us wish this home was closer to Seattle. We decided to bring back this style of door; however, the reality is, IKEA sells more windows than anything else, and most homes have them already. In addition to being the cheapest way to get shingled, they come with several great benefits. A lot of homeowners who want to try this method end up buying cheap aluminum shutters, which work fine, except that they tend to warp after a while.
