If you want durable shutters that'll withstand extreme weather conditions without requiring constant maintenance, go with wood shutters rather than vinyl options. While both products provide similar protection from sunlight, wood has higher UV resistance than vinyl so that paint fades less quickly. However, for anyone who wants something ready to go like I did, a prefabricated unit offers many advantages including being quick to order and ship once orders are placed;
All units are completely customizable, allowing us to offer customers exactly what they want without compromising quality or price;
By choosing a standard sized frame instead of building it ourselves, you get instant savings without sacrificing design flexibility, as well as making everything simpler overall;
One great advantage of prefabs is that they’re designed specifically for residential use, meaning they’re better insulated and therefore save energy costs;
They typically come fully assembled, and since each panel only takes 5 minutes to assemble, installing them can actually take less time (and effort!) than conventional windows;
And finally, because they’re manufactured according to standards, they should stand the test of time just fine—something that isn’t always true of DIY projects.

If you decide to purchase California shutters, be aware that they will cost anywhere from $2000-$12000 per window.
This price includes everything except labor which ranges anywhere form $1000 to $5000 depending upon size, type of window, level of craftsmanship required, etc..
Depending on these 3 factors, average labor rates can range from roughly $1500-$4000. If you wish to install them yourself you should expect costs to be approximately 2/3rds higher than this estimate. However, many people find DIY installing California shutters to be a great project or hobby.
Cost Of Installation, Average Rates:
Average installation rate for windows measuring less than 16 ft wide is around $3500.00; for larger sizes like 24, 32 or 36 ft, then typically run around $4500.00. For example, our largest style, “Nimbus Plus” runs around 30 feet long x 14 inches tall & weighs just under 10 pounds making it slightly less expensive for our customers to ship and install.
Shipping charges vary widely based on location but usually hover around $100.00. This covers UPS shipping both ways plus the handling charge. We only work with professional shippers who specialize in delivering large items. They use trucks designed specifically for moving heavy stuff safely.
Installation requires some skill, tools and a basic understanding of framing design principles. Our staff does most of the actual installation for each job. But of course, we always recommend hiring professionals if possible. Even though this service is called preinstalled, it often takes us weeks of research and development after ordering to get exactly the best fit for your home or business.

In this post I will be sharing my personal experiences installing custom motorized shutters into my own home, both in 2018 and 2019. We had some interesting challenges finding materials, but once the window treatments arrived everything went smoothly. Here are a few tips I’d like to pass along.
1/ If you live or work near water, please ask first about potential environmental impacts (like salt air intrusion issues). Some homes can only afford traditional wooden shutters and they are still great products; others cannot due to structural problems. Ask around locally, call your city office to see if anything could come in handy while you decide which direction to go down. Also consider asking if anyone else owns these types of shutters who would be willing to provide them to you as part of a trade (it sounds like a cool offer).
2/ Keep in mind the size of your house. A large bay door can actually be bigger than most windows and will take longer to install since the tracks must be able to reach across larger distances. Additionally, your installer should understand how large the opening will become, whether it was designed to handle it without having to adjust or replace hardware, and should check with you periodically throughout the project to ensure things aren’t getting too hot.
3/ Keep track during construction of measurements related to length and width of the shutters. You should receive a letter detailing those numbers once you arrive at the store. These measurements are used to accurately cut and shape the panels and trim pieces, and are crucial information for ensuring good fitment.
4/ The installer should be prepared to wait until the weather warms up enough that they won’t freeze. Most companies recommend waiting 3 weeks after installation to allow moisture from rain to dissipate so that you avoid warped frames or damage to the paint on your walls.
5/ Check the website carefully BEFORE purchase to verify compatibility with existing doors. Be wary of “universal design” models because you shouldn’t expect any adjustments for different sizes of doors unless otherwise specified.
6/ Make sure you specify exactly which style and material you desire and why.
