A little history lesson….

A French artisan designed a device to fill in those gaps. He attached thin strips of cloth around the frame which prevented drafts from coming through while allowing plenty of ventilation. Eventually the invention evolved and was refined over several centuries. Today it’s used widely in both residential and commercial applications but most importantly in keeping warm in cold climates. So where does that leave us in Ohio? Our climate is similar so we’d expect a lot of people would consider getting some shutters put up for similar reasons as the original inventors did.
How Does One Go About Selecting The Perfect Product For Your Project?
When selecting a shingle product, first determine whether it will be custom made to fit your specific project requirements or you can purchase a prefabricated model. Prefabricated models come in standard sizes. They usually consist of five panels: 3 exterior panels, 1 center panel and 1 exterior trim piece. If the house is larger, they offer multiple versions of the same size. Some companies only allow the installer to specify certain measurements. Other will provide options and allow the installer to customize the order themselves. When ordering a custom sized product, ensure you include enough material so that no seams show once assembled. When a homeowner says “I love my house but hate window treatments” they usually mean something like their windows looks terrible because they either installed cheap vinyl blinds or have no curtains or drapes over them at all. So why would someone pay thousands+ dollars to install $$$$ worth of custom made wooden shutters when they could save hundreds and just buy $5/roll curtain material? If you take the time to read today’s article though, I’ll show you that investing in custom crafted shutters will actually provide better protection against UV damage than traditional window coverings and provide more value long term.
1st Tip:- Make Sure Your Windows Have Properly Curved Corners: When designing the proper corner design for your home, it helps tremendously to make sure those corners line up exactly with the roofline of the property. Having said that, if you live outside of Northern CA or NV, chances are you won’t be able to find true “curving” shingle type products that would fit properly on that side of your building. Instead, use 3×3′ lap siding panels cut down to size which allow for less expensive materials due to being thinner.
2nd Tip:- Use Aluminum instead of Vinyl Shingles: As most people well know, aluminum isn’t meant to hold water, which makes it perfect for exterior applications. And since the majority of homes these days have flat roofs, metal roofs are far superior to fiberglass ones and offer many benefits besides protecting the integrity of your eaves trough. Additionally, metal roofing systems typically cost way less per square foot plus come with warranties that you get with regular asphalt shingle roofs! Just remember to call around and see who does aluminum roof installations near me first… not everyone will try to sell you anything other than asphalt shingles.
3rd Tip:- Make sure Your Roof Has Good Drainage: Most importantly, ensure that your gutters drain away from your eave troughs and not under the eaves themselves. Otherwise, moisture and debris accumulation inside your gutter system will cause rust issues and eventually lead to leaks.

Before going through some of this content, please take note that I am NOT recommending ANY SHUTTERS company in particular, as this is simply meant to provide insight into my thoughts on the industry and the products available today. We will cover the various types of shutters below.
Now onto the info….
What’s Coming in ‘G’ Series Shutters — These are generally used with smaller openings like windows that aren’t quite big enough to warrant a regular slider style. They’re commonly found on homes built around 1990 onwards.
Roller Shutters — Used primarily for exterior applications like patios, balconies, decks, porches and covered carports. Roller shutters have become almost ubiquitous thanks largely in part to technological improvements. Today these shutters come equipped with remote control systems which allow homeowners to raise/lower them remotely using WiFi connection via apps installed on smartphones. Some models are made from aluminum while some roll shutters feature steel tracks for added strength. Both offer superior security against break ins but roller shutters tend to be heavier than sliders. Also worth noting is that they make excellent screens since they block most light rays from shining straight into rooms. Slider shutters often include blinds along with the shade panels… making them great multipurpose solutions.
Aluminum Rollers — A modern alternative to traditional wooden shingles rolled up into cylindrical tubes used for exteriors is metal roofing. Aluminum is lighter and costlier per square foot but does not rot nor crack. On top of being durable, aluminum sheet material can be easily cut and shaped by DIY enthusiasts to achieve unique design patterns. Unlike vinyl siding though, aluminum requires sealing after installation (a must). For instance, you’ll need caulk to seal joints in order to prevent water seepage and leakage inside the home. If you prefer something sleek yet functional, then aluminum roll shutters would fit perfectly with your needs.
Vinyl Shingle Type Shutters — Vinyl is typically thicker and heavier than both aluminum and aluminum shutters but offers greater durability than either. The primary downside however, is that it’s usually painted white.
